Are Gold Coins Graded Differently?

Are there different precedents for gold coins since its a softer metal? Just curious, please don't blast me, I'm still trying to learn. Thanks!

Yes, they are and your assumption about this being the case because of softer metal is correct.

  • Well thank you all for the quick replies. I'm mostly intersted in collecting gold coins at this time and the more I know the better. I ill probably have more questions along the way. Thanks again!

Gold is a totally different world. Not only are they graded differently but different mints and dates are graded differently. Early C+D mints are near impossible to grade without expertise on the particular issue itself. I suggest you look at a lot of coins before making a purchase. Bob

sadly, it is graded differently by pla$tic companies. just like nickel is a harder metal, so they grade it differently too (?!)
