20th Anniversary Silver Set - pricing

jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
What can I expect to pay for a set? I have seen outrageous prices on Ebay but not sure if they are fair.

Should I buy now before prices go even higher? Or have they reached their peak and I should wait for prices to come down?

Just look at eBay realized auction prices to see what people are buying and presumably consider fair. The prices are different for raw sealed, raw opened, PCGS 69s, PCGS 70s, etc.
  • Get a sealed set (sealed from the mint) @ $ 350 to $ 400......That will be a bargain in a couple of years

I would prefer a Graded (NGC of PCGS) set over an opened set for obvious reasons and the price can be less and you get to view the set, maybe daily, whereas you don't with the sealed.
I picked up a few of the FS PCGS 68 sets for that reason and a few others. Their holders are superb for viewing.
It seems you would like something you can see, although if not, the Sealed is the way to go for the investment side.
I prefer Registered Mail for the Sealed sets as the tape seems more tamper proof. Although less were sent Registered, it seems, it would be worth the effort.
    Good luck!

Good luck finding one for less than $500 now. I don't see them for less than $525 BIN and those seem to sell as soon as they are listed.

I have 3 graded sets. 1 sealed set from the mint and 1 set I opened just to enjoy. I am not going to sell the sealed set for years to come.

Do these milkspot in original mint containers? I have one set (stupid not to get more) and I would like it to stay nice.

Milkspots have only been reported on ASEs stored in TPG slabs and ringed AirTites, and then only occasionally. It seems there may be some combination of Mint production methods and the flexible plastic used to surround the coin in slabs and ringed AirTites.

I wouldn't mind flipping slabbed ASEs but I'm not interested in holding them long term until this issue is resolved.

I understand the reason for buying sealed sets (not picked over) . But before you go paying the higher prices for them, keep in mind that you are also gambling on the quality from the mint. I opened my sets (this was before the sealed set's price differential) and I had to return 2 sets due to damage boxes and minor problems with the coins. So, not all sealed sets have high quality coins in them either. Also, not all sellers picked through them for the best to send in to grade and sell inferior coins in open sets. Many are there to flip them without even looking at the coins. And finally, if I ever decide to sell any of my sets, I would be hard press to find one set worse or better than the other, since I already did pick over my sets and sent the inferior sets back to the mint. image So anybody in the future buying my sets would get very high quality sets even though they are not sealed. Just somethings to about.

Search for 'milk spots' lot's of posts on the subject. No conclusive info.

  • I just had to sell some of my sets to pay for a new camera. My sets were raw, from an opened box. The last one I auctioned closed at $360.00. They are pretty much going in the 350 range but continue to creep upward. You may consider the pricing realized on Ebay as "outrageous", but that is what they are going for. What is outrageous is that these were on sale for weeks at the Mint, and anyone could have had them for 100 a set. It's not like they sold out in one day and people were left out in the cold.

I know. I look back and ask why I didn't drop more into them.

Here is keeping my fingers crossed for something similar this year.

My recent issue of Coin World has them going for around $380.

I am glad I got mine from the mint for only one Ben Franklin........ image

Point taken. If you want to divulge; you returned two sets out of how many opened? Was it the RP that had problems?

Those who send in sealed sets to grade have been hitting MS69 or PFDC/PF69, at very high percentages, though. Yet the key to the set, the RP has almost an even shot at getting a 68 vs a 70, IF the coin doesn't grade RP69.

For storage just use one of those vegetable sealers. Cover the slab in the plastic, suck all of the air out and you will have a slabbed spot free ASE for life.

Only one was the RP. I only bought 8 sets. image 25% returned rate is pretty high but I guess I was just unlucky.

Ok, just got back from local coin show and spent some time today....looking.

Saw 3 sets for sale. 3 different dealers.

    1 set for $350
    1 set for $380
3rd dealer had the set for $800!!! "Last night, the guys at Shop at Home had these on for almost $1000 and these are going to go up since 2 of the 3 coins in there are so rare and everyone will need them" image

I love these coins, and the sets, but hearing that (he was talking to a woman and her kid at the time), I had a hard time repressing my outloud laughter image

Set didn't sell that I could see image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

It would probably be scary to see how many of the $1000 sets the Shop at Home network sold........

Go with the sealed set. You need to worry about ASE's milk spotting in the slab.

You'll pay much more than that for a sealed set. Opened sets are going for about that much.
