I HOPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE SAFE
Pick the lowest place in your house to take cover before a tornado. Basements are great, but if you don't have a basement, choose an interior doorway or hallway.
Cover your head to protect it from flying debris. Use a mattress or a piece of sturdy furniture.
Stay away from windows and other glass (aquariums, mirrors, etc.).
Keep a wrench near the gas meter and be sure you know how to turn the gas off.
Make a supply box including a battery operated weather band radio, candles, flashlights, blankets, water and batteries.
Stay inside! If you are in a car, pull to the side of the road and get out of the car (get in a ditch if possible). You cannot out run a tornado.
Television and radio (weather band) are the best places to listen for up to date information.
Tips:
Don't wait until you hear the sirens to take cover. Many times, the sirens don't ring until it's too late.
If you live in a mobile home leave it and go somewhere else when there is a tornado watch.
It is a myth that open windows will lessen the effects of a tornado. It is best to keep them closed.

<< <i>I'm a weather buff. Go to intellicast.com and click on the radar. The good news now, there doesn't appear to be any more "bow echo curves" (which show rotation) in the DFW area.
It is a very intense storm though, the radar shows the tops to be 55,000 feet with severe cells scattered all over.
Good luck, because this is a very dangerous storm even with out tornados. >>
Laura,
I am very impressed! Were you a "weather lady" in a previous life?

Keep safe!
30 seconds ago, a tornado touched down near Lake Tawakoni (radio just announced it) which I think is less than 20 miles from here. So far I've counted 4 tornados reported with this storm in the metroplex. Tornado warnings have been issued everywhere!
You should have seen the sky, the clouds were green/grey with a constant rumble of thunder. Funny thing is though that it didn't rain one drop until right after it hailed then it stopped hailing.
My family and I had a place in the closet under the stairs in the center of the house with a twin matress to cover the doorway after the door was closed just in case the door got ripped off it's hinges. We had a weather radio, flashlights, batteries, and some germx that melissa picked up before we ducked in there. We've never had to do that before ever.
Thank everyone so much for your prayers. I feel that in some way, it kept me and my family safe.
<< <i>We were just north of the bad stuff (lewisville) but its nice and calm out now. I didn't know you were in the DFW area, crazy weather these last 2 weeks... I trust all is well now? >>
Oh, you mean like the blizzard we had last Saturday? Yes, we got snow last saturday (the day before Easter). It wasn't just "flurries" but all out snow where you couldn't see the buildings 200yds away.

Now don't ya'll wish you were here in sunny souuuthern california- some of our winds from yesterday were only averaging in the 40-50 category- that is the storm you are now experiencing Brandon.
cover up boys you might be in for a looooong night..
wife and I are hoping you make it out ok Brandon.
I surely don't miss Texas right now.

I am due east of Dallas and watching the weather very closely. We have another hour or two before the same storm front moves thru this area. I hope the track of this thing swings a little further to the north and we miss the roughest part. The rain is already here but they are talking hail and 70 mph straight line winds plus the possibility of tornados. I think I will shut down the computer and make some preperations for some tough weather myself.
I could use some of those happy thoughts and prayers myself folks.

<< <i>I can empathize and relate. This one chased me home from work when I was 20 yrs old >>
I remember that one well (I was 11 at the time) -- we were living in South Carolina, but my parents are from Omaha and most of our relatives were living there then. It was a really nasty one that destroyed 72nd street -- made national news as well. Miraculously, only 3 people killed -- it helped that school was out at the time.
I WAS living near Omaha (in Bellevue) in 1971 when a tornado hit Offutt AFB -- we ducked in the basement, and fortunately the tornado flew right over us. The thing I remember most was how the sky was this sickly dark green color -- like you just knew something bad was going to happen.
Take action and get as far away, as soon as possible!
