Just curious......... who in forum land collects 1950-70 Cameo Proof and SMS coins.............

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,636 ✭✭✭✭✭
.......... to either:

1. keep as part of your collection and/or;

2. flip to make money.

For those who do collect these coins, what is it about them that makes you want to collect them

For me, I collect them for my collection and for resale. I like collecting them because:

1. I remember collecting proof sets as a kid in the early 1960's;

2. The coins in the sets (especially the wheaties and silver coins) are those I grew up with;

3. Cameo and DCAM examples of these coins are very beautiful;

4. These coins are fun to hunt for (they are hard to find, but not impossible to find, thus you get rewarded from time to time when you find a winner); and

5. Maybe, just maybe, I will break even or profit on these coins when I sell.

    Russ, STOP bragging! We are tired of your coins bought for less than $10 each! LOL Actually, we are VERY jealous!!! At least I am. GREAT coins. Kennedy is my favorite to! I collect all the pre-1971 coins in cameo I can find. They are so hard to come by and pretty. I can appreciate what the coins had to go thru to get thier cameo/DCAM appearance and how few are left in a high state of preservation. Granted, they ARE Modern Crap, BUT, I like them anyway. Ray

  • I only collect 1950-1967, with the exception of the 68 25c. Much better looking the older coins IMO.

    Edited to join in the picture posting fun:
    Here are what few pictures I have uploaded; I don't have any of my better coins or newest ones because I have not photographed a coin since the summer. Over the last two weekendsI picked up a possible (the fields might not be good enough) DCAM 1967 SMS 50c ~MS68, a CAM 1965 SMS 5c ~MS66+, a possible CAM 1965 SMS 10c ~MS68+++, a CAM+ 1967 5c ~MS67, 1966 No FG 50c, and finally a CAM 1967 SMS 25c ~MS68. It was a good spring break : D.

  • I would post mine but I don't want to embarrass Russ. image

    I love the hunt of finding them in CAM/DCAM. I have had a lot of luck lately but I have much to learn of this series...especially the SMS sets. There are so many varieties in each year.

    I also look to this board for an education in learning more about them.

    I have a few cameo Lincolns from this era. My original goal was to put together the 50-58 cameo set, but I've not actively tried to finish this set in several years.

    TTT.

    For those who have replied yes, do any of you (besides Skyman and moi) reside in Northern California?

    If you do, would you have any interest in meeting at the Santa Clara show (or other Nor Cal. shows coming up this year)?

    I realize this is 12 years too early, but for those that like cameos I will be bringing this to Santa Clara:

    Skyman, I drooled over that one last week when I saw it for the first time. I will say it again, that is probably the nicest coin I have ever seen.
  • Gorgeous proof Walker, SkyMan!

    You and Sanction are making me homesick. I used to live in the Santa Cruz mountains and attended all the Santa Clara and San Jose shows. Wish I could be there! image

    FWIW, I have a nice collection of cameo/deep cam proof Washingtons in my registry set.
    I also have a '67 SMS 67DCam Washie and a '64 PR67CAM AH Kennedy because they're cool. image

    I did a 56 cam/dcam set and liked it enough to make it a keeper. Then started picking up dcam Frankies till I had a box full. One neat coin I picked up was a 1C- 1950 in Ucam, that's always been a neat item.

    As I've progressed I've moved on into the older cam stuff, but tend to look for old luster over mirrors in general, along with big over small.
    Need something designed and 3D printed?
  • I used ta have smoe decent stuff.

    I have done the SMS coins; finished the 65-67 sets in high cameo and am two coins into the 64 set. They were for myself. Since the normal SMS sets are done, I probably will let go of them sooner than later so other collectors can work them into their collections. The 64 set will take some time and is probably a keeper for much longer.

    how'd i miss this the first time around????

    i've had some real success in the past several months, since probably Thanksgiving. i managed to find quite a few Gems of all denominations. initially i was selling some of the best stuff to offset the prices of the Sets, but i recently decided to assemble a run of Proof/SMS Sets from 1950-1972 in Capital Holders. last November i purchased a 1950 Set that yielded a PF66CAM Lincoln, a PR65CAM Jefferson, a PR65 Half-Dollar and a Quarter that would probably grade PR67. i don't know whether it was a put together set or not but i felt fortunate to find it.

    i've also managed to put back Quarters with Cameo/Deep Cameo surfaces for most years from 1953-1964 and have found some nice SMS coins, also. i started grabbing all the toned Dimes i could find with the intention of submitting a complete set from 1950-1964 but abandoned the idea when i decided to go the Capital route. i'll try to post some pictures if i can find the right CD.

    I bought a bunch of SMS's in the early 80's 'cause they were so cheap. They've done a fine job of maintaining their value, not counting inflation. I was new to collecting. image
