Somewhat new to coins

I understand that toned coins are desirable. How does toning occur in a way that almost looks like paint?

For example; this one (this is not my auction, I am not spamming).

Pfft! uh huh

They both have probably been enhanced artificially. Not desirable at all. I know the second one has for sure, but I need clarification on the first. Steer clear of these guys.

My first guess is heat and chemicals, or maybe both. I'm no expert, but that's my oppinion of the two examples.

Yes, the peace dollar is obviously AT= Artificially toned.

I'm still deciding on the Morgan, though.image

The seller has a wordy "guarantee" that is basically meaningless.
You can return the coin if it is misrepresented. He then goes on to state in a lengthy dissertation that he only offers opinions. More than likely the coins are all AT. I'd steer clear of this ebayer.

My opinion is that neither coin is original.

<<I understand that toned coins are desirable.>>

By the way, not all toning (even if completely original) is desirable. Many naturally toned coins are quite unattractive and sell at deserved discounts.

the second coin was baked for sure

Here is a good question. How many of you would buy a coin that had awesome toning if you KNEW it was baked? I would if it were cheap enough. I wouldn't spend any real money on it.

This seems like it ended at fair price. It went for slightly higher then I may have been willing to pay, but fair.

Fake toning or not, they look purdy. I'd only pay a fraction of what that guy did, but thats just me.

Hey, when I clicked on the link, it had that "rover" heading on it that we were warned about a while back. What's up?

I pm'd Otis about this. If anyone else is reading this second page, don't click on the links in the original post.

And Tom, you better not have been directing that post at me, dude. I was warning everyone.

    Pharmer, the OP stated

<< <i>this is not my auction, I am not spamming >>

however, it is clear that the OP was spamming and that jearl is an alt ID as well as zenlaw007. My post was directed to the OP, which should have been understood.

What is a rover link? I see it in the URL, but this is the first I've heard about it.

Did it ever occur to you to warn people about the links like I did? That's called doing something about it. You just let folks keep on clicking the links. I posted the warning as soon as I saw the "rover" heading. Why didn't you if you knew about this "hours" ago?

It's a referral link where the spammer gets paid for click-thrus. It isn't a virus or anything dangerous.

I posted a thread on the NGC boards regarding these, and tinyurl masked links, because the spammers were getting more plentiful. If you are interested, the NGC thread is here.
