Does any one know anything about the "Fellowship of Christian Numismatists"?

I saw they are having a meeting Friday morning, May 11th at the Central States convention.

Just curious. image

Just curious about information about the organization. How long it's been in existance? Do they follow the major coin show circuit?

Didn't mean to arouse any hostility or open any old wounds, just asking a question.

no hostility but it sounds like a preacher got wise with tidings and it grew from there

  • Well it sounds like a group of christians, not bad in my book!!image As for titheing, a true christian gives to God not the pastor, and we as christians pray for our preacher to do with the money what God would want.

It's reverse tithing...the involved dealers never pay more than 10% of a coin's value. image

Pssst, don't be so hard on yourself brother.... Remember, we ain't to judge.
I'm trying to to start some COINTROVERSY here.

Mitch, to answer your question, I think most of us Christians rendered unto Ceasar and got sick of coins after that.

I just happen to enjoy the education that comes along with them and I admit, I Love Numismatists like brothers.

I guess I was just curious to see how other numismatists worked out the "you can't worship both God and money" imperative? image

Is it fair to assume that this group's focus is on the application of religious teachings to numismatic commerce? If so, how many members can they have? If not, what is their purpose?

How many collectors tithe with rare or gold coins like people do with Salvation Army donations?

Perhaps they will talk about the Godless GW$s and how to get IWGT back on the face of coins in the future? Perhaps they'll discuss why and how IGTW got relegated to the edge? Did the Mint get this idea from the 1995 Ron Landis concept dollar?

Having attended a meeting of the Fellowship of Christian Coin Dealers (though not a dealer, I was invited), I would imagine it's very similar. Bible study and discussion, prayer requests and prayer.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Why are you implying that religious teachings and numismatic commerce are incompatible?

Ahh, the application of religious teachings to numismatic commerce. Now that could cover a wide area of numismatics. Could it be even higher than supposed PNG dealer standards?

Certainly not! However, the application of religious teachings to numismatic commerce is not a subject of interest to many dealers.

I don't see what the issue is. Many folks in our community have strong religious (the prefer the term faith though) convictions. I am sure there are issues related to numismatics as the hobby and the business that have concerns within their context of their faith. If not even it is just another club where people with similar interests can comingle for a while now and then. I very much prefer these types of groups to the same discussions being regular parts of broader clubs, corrupting general inclusivity. I have my own story of a local coin club where this was an issue for me in particular.

Actually, I think this group meets at virtually every major show as I have seen several scheduled meeting times like the one described at different shows. I have never been to one but like someone else says I imagine it to be a fellowship of Christians who are also numismatists. Definitely open to the public.

Anyone know if they issue club medals? Mmmm, makes me think of Mormon gold.
  • wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,357 ✭✭✭
It is an ad hoc group. There is no formal organization or membership process. With coin shows often taking place on weekends, the meeting is an opportunity for Christian dealers to meet for a worship session Sunday morning before the bourse opens. The content of the meeting is similar to what one would experience in a Sunday morning church service. I know some sessions are lead by Mark Aberecce (sp?) of Mark's Coins from Georgia (he's a military chaplin). Also, I think I recall hearing that Virg Marshall, III used to lead some sessions when he was more active in attending shows (and may have even started the tradition).
