yet another eBay scam
The auction just ended. it was a rare 1856 Snow-2 Flying Eagle Cent graded PR-64 Cameo.

Anyway, after a few seconds of excitement, I notice that I bought this very coin in a Heritage Auction last October. It is currently secure in a collection.
Heritage Auction
So I notify ebay about a possible fraud, and send the seller the following e-mail:
I bought this coin from the Heritage Dallas Auction in October 2006. You are obviously attempting a fraud. I am presently taking action to stop your auction. I would suggest you stop it yourself at once to avoid any problems. <my name & phone #>
The auction was not stopped.
The winner was my Office Manager. The seller contacted her with instructions to send 30% payment via wire transfer and then pick up the coin. We'll see what kind of info we can get on this guy. I am suprised eBay did not do anything.

No, it's such a rare coin, that it would be very remote. The cert number on the ebay auction is probably a 1907 in MS63RB.
Zero feedback seller.
Don't people realize they could get in trouble for this?
<< <i>Look at the pictures again. It looks like a coin over a slab not in a slab. >>
I dont see what you see, it looks in the slab to me. IMO
Here's the ebay auction image:
Here's the Heritage image:
I'd say no selling of items over $1,000 in value until your feedback hits 100, and a year on eBay. You'd reach an approval point then and be reviewed by eBay to see if you qualify for higher sales. It would reduce scamming overnight.

The coin is sitting in a collection in a PCGS PR-64CAM holder. I have no idea what is in the holder "Under" the picture in the ebay auction.

That line running through the wing and beak is pretty distinctive on both is it not?

"It is also interesting that although it is obviously the same coin, in the eBay auction it claims to be in an NGC slab that is from someten to twelve generations EARLIER than the NGC slab it was in last October. The Heritage sale has it in the most recent slab, while the eBay sale has it in an NGC 5 used from 1992 to 1995."
<< <i>We can drive to IA and drop off the check and pick up your coin for you... I'll bring Sego, he looks real mean when he is carrying a pipe!!! >>
theDoc lives in the CHGO area also. MadOne, roadtrip? I use a kneebusting baseball bat or tire iron! :-)
When you get the wire transfer instructions, why not out the guy for the board, and then get the cops involved - have them waiting for him at the bank.
I knew it would happen.
They did do a nice job putting the image of the 1856 over whatever PF64CAM cent was in that holder (assuming it even was a cent, they could have dropped that over a dime or half dime, too).

We got an email from ebayer Goldman1999 warning us about the possible fraud. Thanks! That was very good of him, and I would hope others would do the same if they suspected a fraud.
Also ebayer nickelfreak warned us , again thanks!
We're going to try and get to pickup the coin in person and "pay" then.
The NGC holder number references a 1950 Quarter graded PR-64 Cameo according to NGC.
You'll never get that far, Rick. They will run. I had something like this regarding selling furniture. Sent me a CHECK (bogus) to me for MORE money than cost of the hutch, and then wanted me to "send them the difference." I kept trying to get them to get there "movers" to meet me. I stayed "excited" the whole time, keeping the "buyer" interested. They were ultimately caught, from what little the authorities told me.
If you really want to get this person, stay enthused, and play poker with them.

That is JP Morgan Chase Bank. Their fraud department's phone number is: 888-282-5867. I was actually speaking with them regarding something else when I saw this. They said their isn't much they could do at this time as you haven't sent money, but feel free to contact them and they will note the account. They might be able to send you to the correct law enforcement agency for the address on record of the account holder as well.
Good luck.

I believe it's fun to mess with people when they were trying to mess with others and got caught.
I also believe it was good of you to win the auction (or your employee) to keep others from being scammed!

Send a buck to it then ask JP Morgan Chase to do something since money was sent
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Not to mention the "1856 1c" is an obvious photoshop and the pictures do appear to be placed over other pictures

I have 2 children, my husband is sick...how is it possible for you to believe that I steal your money? ok, send 20 % today. If you send it today, I will meet your sister and I will show her coin and as soon as you have all the money to give me, I will give her the coin too...first time, you agreed, now I dont understand anything.
PS: when you marked, you could have sent an email and ask me, maybe you would not have marked it, someone else could have made the deal...I am an honest woman that is very faithful to God.

In an interview and interrogation course I took a while back, it seems that liars always swear to/by an unverifiable source. Usually God, dead people etc.

Perhaps the owner is in South Korea, judging from the bad English.
Of course the number is bogus.
<< <i>Thanks Walkerminus1, we called the bank and they were thrilled to find out about this. They may freeze the account.

No. That type of broken English isn't usually Korean. Not sure who it is but I would bet against Korean.

I wonder if the broken English is just as contrived as the belief in God. (Good observation options26.) I don't know what you guys think, but blurting out "what makes you think I am stealing from you" in response to an attempt to work out payment method does not exactly inspire confidence.

<< <i>As long as eBay allows zero feedback sellers to put up $10,000 coins for sale, these scams will continue. It's ridiculous isn't it?

When they start calling on a "higher power" for legitimacy they know they're in trouble.

I agree when you say it probably isn't going towards a criminal prosecution, but you definitely did the right thing by contacting the bank. And you most certainly did the right thing by winning the auction.
Thank you.

That said, what was your office manager thinking, buying a $13,000 coin from a zero feedback seller on eBay???????????
edit: d'oh! nevermind
The poor grammar, sentence construction etc. Plus "My husband is sick" "I'm a woman of god" etc. etc.
Nearly all Nigerian scams including "you are the heir to $40 million " request (require) bank transfers" and are worded in similar fashion.
