Wash 25c variety experts, ever seen this apparent inverted large S trumpet tail?

This mintmark, on a 1941s 25c, looks precisely like that of fs-013.5, large S trumpet tail, except that it's upside down with the flare at the top. See fs-013.5 to get my drift. So, am I missing something here, or is it indeed inverted? Thanks for your input and setting me straight.

I'm certainly no expert on the series (or any other for that matter) but it does look inverted. Nice find.

    Pharmer,

That definitely looks like an inverted trumpet tailed S to me.

Interesting find. I have not heard or read of an inverted version.

Thanks guys, I sent Jose' Cortez this image, and he agrees. I'm excited.

  • Nice find. From what little of the coin is in the picture, it looks to be in pretty good shape too.

This very under-rated, long standing series holds a lot of secrets yet to be discovered. Nice find Pharmer. image

Hey Pharmer, how are you buddy?
Let me ask you one question about this one.
First off- it sure looks like an inverted trumpet tail at first glance. The only thing that may be in question and only you can look at this with the coin in hand.... These trumpet S mintmarks, as you know, can look pretty funky at times, is that a possible hit on the inside of the upper curve of this S that might have pushed some metal into the end of the tail of the S ?
I don't think so looking at this pic, but if that isn't a hit then I would be "all in" that this was an inverted trumpet.
Looks good and I hope you got a winner thereimage

John, here's a couple more images, first another with the nikon 4200, then a qx5 image. I'm not convinced either way yet.

    Hey Pharmer,
I was just looking thru a couple of rolls of 44S Lincolns and I came across one that looks just like the MM on your Washie.
These trumpet S mintmarks can be really funky looking.
Here is a pic of the inverted looking trumpet S next to a "normal" S

Thanks John. There is a disagreement going on between Jose' Cortez and James Wiles about this. Jose' agrees with my analysis, and suggested I send the images to Dr. Wiles to see if it was listed yet. James says it a normal mintmark in the normal position. Now they both say the other guy is wrong. image Anyway, the thrill of another discovery was cool, my first in this series, and we'll see if it pans out. If not, it's the hunt that counts.
