This has been BB'd on both sides of the street. What is your opinion of the grade if it had not been cleaned.

AU50 cleaned and scratched to boot. image
    When in doubt, don't.
  • XF45
    Possibly whizzed.
It is such a shame that people have tried to "improve" coins like this 1889-CC.
    It seems to be frequent.
I guess that is one of the causes of why it is becoming more and more difficult to find high grade good coins.

It is sickening what some people do to coins. It's bad enough on nice old coins, but why in the world would they mess with ones that are so scarce? I purchased this about 15 years ago.....before I knew about cleaning, whizzing and what I should be on the look out for.

Oh my, what a shame,,,,,had a cleaned one too, and just sold it last week on the bay. Your's does have better
detail. If it was not cleaned I'd say you would have had a AU50PL. Yep, I believe that that was once a PL or
DMPL coin (not too unusual for the 89cc). Nice die clashing. Still a fun coin to own!

AU-50 details. What a shame. Still if it's authentic a lot of folks would love to have it.

To think, it may have been high AU to 63, when someone took a brillo pad to it.

If no cleaning 55 shot 58.

  • YOUR ALL TOO CRITICAL!

It is a nice solid AU53 details coin. The cleaning does NOT ruin it, it just impairs it a little. Plenty of original luster and detail, and the cleaning does not appear to be too aweful--try it at ANACS
  • Make it a pocket piece and wear that beauty down to low VF, maybe that'll take care of those cleaning marks. Hard hit below the CC too.

It's still rare and you can always carry it around for a real long time till all the bad stuff disappears from wear. image

You're too generous. (XF40 at best) IF, and that is the operative word, the original skin were there and it wasn't damaged by HARSH cleaning, evidenced by hairlines that look like dry riverbeds....and that shine or luster you see were actually not so impaired, it would fit better in a taco bell napkin for six months and it could pass at PCGS, but the fact is: it got trashed by someone thinking they were gonna make it better by "shining" it up using a scouring pad and toothpaste or somethin'.

    on a side note:

ANACS is like a marble tombstone over a grave. It's a sign that says "LOOK who's buried here".

I will agree with Boom's assertion, too. Pocketpiece that coin image

The OP asked what grade it would be if the cleaning was ignored so just focus on the strike details.
