What do numismatic appraisers charge?

This is for a real appraisal. The appraiser would NOT have the opportunity to purchase any of the coins.
Is it normally done by the hour?
Is there an initial consultation fee that informs the client if an appraisal is even worth the expense of doing?

Formal written appraisal, within reason, sure, why not? Customer is responsible for shipping both ways, grading as well if desired of course, but the time to review and type an appraisal? Just as I said. Now if there's a gazillion coins, then I might charge a few bucks but I'd also try to be as accomodating as possible.
Unless the customer is a jerk in which case the offer to help would be declined.

<< <i>Usually, an initial phone call to determine viability is at no charge. If this results in an appraisal being done, $75/hr. seems to be the going rate, although I've seen $50-100 charged. The meter is usually running during travel time and preparation of the appraisal documents. >>
My area of the country the prices are a little lower, so I charge $50 per hour, travel time doesn't count unless someone is a long way from me, but preparation of the appraisal documents incl. researching market prices does count. Typically for each 2 hrs. in viewing the coins there is 1 hr. of market research and appraisal document preparation.

Many of my more experienced colleagues charge a real professional rate, similar to what you would pay an attorney.
If the collection does not require a sophisticated level of expertise, then most dealers are able to do it and you have seen the level of their fees.
It also depends on where you live. Manhattan, NY is more expensive than Manhattan, Kansas.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
