What does "Questionable color RD" mean exactly?

Counterfeit? Or they aren't certain, so unwilling to grade?
  • Looks like off to ANACS they should go

OUCH!, That submission is going to leave a mark!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

That is very sad. Those are some expensive big boy coins right there on top if it all. Im guessing, as always, that they were bought raw on ebay.

Forget "donating $100 to PCGS." It appears the guy has lost a couple of grand at least on the coins themselves.

Looks like maybe someone tried the e-bay thing for the first time and got burned.

I'm guessing that something was done to make the coin look originally red, although it was not.

This is jst awfulimage. You know these were someones prized possessions and to see these grades must be more than a let down. PCGS should send submitters like this a link to this forum for some help or at least for some emotional support. I wonder if they send a personel message with a submission this bad?
  • drwstr123drwstr123 Posts: 7,049 ✭✭✭✭✭
They don't send diddly! ...(or so I've heard)...

No personal message, just an email and a link to the final grades that are in the first post.

They at least send the coins back.

I wish that for the grading fee that it would include a verbal description of the grade. Something like you would get when you pay a grading fee at a reputable dealer. For this we have to pay extra for the presidential review but I have heard that sometimes all you get is a few quick scribbles on a notepad.

I remember getting some hand written notes from anacs back in the 80's on some of my first submissions that were pretty bad.
  • mozeppamozeppa Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭
i'd say they left a mark when they was purchased...

no doubt they'll wind up on ebay as...

LQQK!.....WOW!....ESTATE!....GRANPA'S!....NEED MONEY... NO TIME TO HAVE GRADED!, MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN!
  • My problem with that submission is that since the first 1909svdb got bagged for questionable color PCGS is not giving him their opinion as to whether the coin is genuine. I think for the submission fee PCGS should owe him that much. I went though the same thing with a 1936 Proof WLH. PCGS bagged it for cleaning, Anacs then bagged it as not genuine......My $.02
  • they should NET grade; it would be less painful. Especially given the chunk of change spent on fees' postage, insurance etc.

No, he paid PCGS for a grade opinion for each coin. If you have raw coins and you want an unbiased and educated opinion, you will have to pay someone.

Good point. I agree 100%. You deserve at least that considering the high the cost of grading fees. I wish they net graded and slabbed like ANACS does.

I can understand not wanting to Net Grade. I only wish the cost of grading would include a complete sentence instead of a phrase. Mike

    5 out 0f 7 is painful too.

Looks like someone else thought he could make money on eBay overgrade Morgan scammers.

My first submission of 4 coins (free as part of membership) resulted in 4 BBs but they weren't big dollar coins like this. Got a very valuable education out of it and my next one only had 1 BB. In truth I've only had two submissions that didn't have any. image It's tough learning the lessons when PCGS's reply is so curt!

Very true but as I've said more than once ALL tpg's should think customer service first and good customer service would include a clear consise explanation of the problem. That way thier customers could learn from the mistake.

    nothing ventured , nothing gained.

The IRS allows for losses, but only for so long. Personally its taken me a couple years of losing to figure that out. Not by bodybags, but by which coins are highest enough on the grade scale to warrant submission on re-sell... even if me an' BooBoo gotta do beans n franks, it's still the best forest in the whole world.

I was 1 for 8 with the BB's on my last submission. I still don't know why the 1926 S Buff get the bag. It is a poorly struck XF-AU coin that I have owned for 30 years. I bought it as a G-VG when I was a teenager. I recognized then that the problem was strike not wear. The obverse is so poorly struck that the date is incomplete but there is still some mint luster and the horn is full (if only at the right angle). Altered surface???

The rest of the submission is not too bad in my opinion.

The 1916 PR65 Buff was bought raw on eBay. It was labeled as a proof but no one seemed to believe it. The coin looked nice so I paid MS65+ money for it.....eBay is not ALL bad!!

The 3 leg was also raw on eBay as a VF and sold cheap.
