I gave a coin collecting merit badge seminar tonight

I did it for the local troop--28 kids showed up. Most of then were pretty reluctant when I first started, but as I began to give away prizes they got more and more into it. I also gave them all a whitman folder and a roll of pennies--they spent about 20 minutes on that. By the time the thing was over (tonight was part 1 of 2) I had kids jumping on the tables to answer questions (even the older scouts)! It's great to see so many kids getting interested in numismatics

I received coin collecting merit badge a few years ago, and I am now a counselor for it. I haven't had the pleasure of teaching it yet, but I am anxiously awaiting when I do.

Good job, GoldenEyeNumismatics! We need to encourage young people's interest in numismatics whenever we can and you're walking the walk! image

You're a good man. I just volunteered to do the same thing for a local scout troop, and am looking forward to getting the call. It sounds like a rewarding experience.

Excellent idea. I think the more we promote collecting to kids, the more we preserve the hobby for future generations.

I started to post a happy face. The easy thing to do.

What you did, was not easy and quick.

My sincere congratulations for doing something that was not only worthwhile, but took time and effort. Beats a smiley face every day of the week. Thanks. jws

  • Time well spent. Exellent planning and execution. I like the way you had some prizes to spark the interest.

Congrats on an excellent job image

I'm pretty sure I have the stamp collecting one but I have no idea if I ever got the coin collecting one.

Good for you man! We need more people like you in this hobby.
  • Great to here this! I'm a merit badge counselor also, and it sure is a lot of fun to help along a new collector. Keep up the good work, and thank you for helping out the boy scouts.

Cool -- I remember earning my coin collectimg merit badge *mumblety* years ago, I was already an "experienced" numismatist by then! Recently found the old type set I had put together for it, not much in there worth mentioning except a VF Barber Half that's probably worth more than everything else in there combined. I'm trying to remember how I got it....
