opinions on possible bust half purchases

OK I love to do this. I like to imagine that I can take some of you around with me when I shop for coins and get your opinions. So this is the next best thing.

Here are a few bust halfs I am looking at, give me your opinion on coin and suggested price.

Thanks Rob

Definate pass on the 1st one. The 2nd two look promising.

I would stay away from 1 and 3. The second one looks OK.
If you are looking for a nice bust half no need to settle for a cleaned example and number three looks a little optimistic on the grade

#3 is my personal favorite. It may be a tad overgraded but it is a beautiful coin. I would stay away from #1.

They do not look like any rare die varieties.

    Stay away from #1.

#2 looks nice and original. The price isn't all that bad.

#3 would need to be seen in hand.
Great transaction with: Relaxn, Collectorcoins, OKCC

I would definately choose door #2. Nice original look and the price it right.
#1 has been cleaned. 'nuf said.
#3 doesn't have the eye appeal that #2 has.

I would have to see that one in hand, the color looks a little off but it could be the pic. THat would have to be a very nice AU++ to be worth close to 600

They are claiming ms material..................... 60 obverse 63 reverse.....

This is what they have written about this coin....................

1824, Capped Bust Half Dollar MS61/63 rev, O117 R1, Fantastic overall appeal. Beautiful steel blue and pink toning over lustrous fields. Most stars are flat. Rev is bold with brighter blue and gold toning. Would be a solid MS63 if not for two scratches on obv

bodybaggable scratches? If that concerns you...

Plus, the coin does not appear to be UNC

I don't think that 1824 would go MS. and the scratches would bother the mess out of me, especially that one jutting out of her nose. 600 is rather pricey for that one IMO.

I like #2 in your first post, looks real original. #1-pass. #3-overgraded with rim bumps

  • The 34 is a strong XF45. For the money the best bet. I sold one recently in XF40 on ebay for $167.

To make a good judgement on a coin with that much toning I would have to see it in hand. Eye appeal is important to me. From your pics, I really doubt that this one would come back from a reputable TPG as an unc. That much toning might even be artifical. If I were going to spend $600.00 on a raw coin I wouldn't take a chance on this one without seeing it in hand.

I would pass on all of them, without a second thought. You need to find a better dealer.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I would pass on all- except I would want to look at #3 a bit more closely- it's hard to tell from the pics, but it might have nice eye appeal with the heavy toning. The others all have too many problems for me to be happy with them...
