Have you ever...

... had a coin start collecting you??
I never intended to start collecting the '76 bicentennial quarter, and as far as I know I'm still not collecting them... but for some strange reason whenever I see those guys in the three-pointed hats I always end up picking them out, and I can never bring myself to spend them. I say I don't collect them because I have no particular place that I keep them, they are in the junk drawer, jewelry box, old purses, pants pocket, on the water heater beside the washing machine, by the phone, randomly scattered in boxes from previous moves. I don't even have any idea how many I actually have, or why I have them, it's not like they're hard to find!
So, anyone else have a pesky little coin that keeps cropping up and that doesn't want to go back into circulation?

I have a very hard time spending 1970-1974 cents from SF. When I was a kid growing up on the East Coast I rarely ever saw SF coins so I had the idea that they were rare. I still feel that way and can't bring myself to let go of them when I see them, which is frequently now that I live on the west coast.

My sister lives in Georgia and I send her 5 new Denver state quarters every time they come out. I also add all the bicentennial quarters i get in change as for some reason she wants them. I told her they aren't woth but 2 bits, but she still wants them..........Go figure.....Rick

  • I agree with the "when I was a kid..." theory, I think that's where these non-sensical impulses must be from. In thinking back on it, in 1976-1977 we moved to a tiny town in Ohio to help my grandparents run their gas station/bait store and I ran the register a lot (I was 7-8 years old), and those 'new' coins probably caught my eye back then... leading to my impulse habit of picking them out of change to this day.

I save every draped and capped bust coin that I find in my pocket change.

  • Since I was a kid I held on to everything that was pre-1965, including lincolns and jeffersons for some reason... they still catch my eye too.

My icon IS my coin. It is a gem 1949 FBL Franklin.
  • I'm a sucker for Ikes that I pick up at the bank. They are usually all AU with no real extra value, but I just think they are too cool to spend
  • I used to do the same thing. I had rolls of bicentennial quarters. I realized that they would NEVER be worth more than
25 cents, so I spent them all doing my laundry.

Actually I do... lol. You want to buy some rolls? Only 8 cents a nickel! (plus the standard $10 shipping fee for "my time" image )
