PCGS holder damaged in transit!

pcgs69pcgs69 Posts: 4,410 ✭✭✭✭
I recently sold a coin on ebay, and sent it out insured. The buyer told me he received it yesterday, but the top portion of the PCGS slab was broken off. Fortunately the coin is not harmed. I'm curious what should be my first steps? Contact PCGS for a reholder... or do they need to have a membership to have this done? Contact the PO too?

This is the first time something like this has happened. Any advice would be great!

File the insurance claim and move on. Let the Post Office keep the coin. You will have to refund the buyer's money.

What's does the buyer want? Pay for a re-holder (5 bucks) or refund his money and have the coin shipped back.

You might file a PO claim, but those slabs rarely break if properly packaged.

Very common for this to break this way if it goes through the cancellation (or something similar to this) machine. Can be prevented by proper packing, or type of service requested.

But not always. I've had a package come to me packaged well (and thick) and with services such that it shouldn't go through a machine. Even so, it did, and two slabs met their maker.

I once received a coin in a PCGS slab that was broken the same way (top / label portion of the slab broken off). The PO insurance claim paid for the reholder fees and shipping both ways. -Preussen

I recently had a buyer notify me that the holder had a crack, which was definitely not there when I shipped the coin.

Long story short I offered to re-holder the coin, or if the buyer was sending in a submission I offered to pay the $5.00 re-holder fee.
The buyer chose the $5.00 re-holder fee and everyone was happy.

I purchased a PCGS slabbed coin on BST and it was broken in half when I recieved. Unfortunately the break was across the coin and the coin was damaged. The PO refunded the insured amount. The slab was sent in a padded mailer. Shows how rough the mail is handled sometimes!

I had one break once. I accepted the return for a full refund. The coin was not damaged and PCGS re-holdered it.

From then on I use two layers of cardboard or bubble wrap inside a padded envelope. The package must avoid those automated sorting machines as they are the best slab crackers around. The PO says more than 3/4" thick will not work in the sorting machines but I would go thicker just to make sure.

If the tag could have been consequently compromised, I am not so sure that a simple reholdering would be possible.

Yup, the USPS doesn't exactly treat packages like cartons of eggs.

"Here ya go, Joe...go out for a long one." Zoooom! image

Worse yet is when they've had a beverage or two on break and play kickball with our packages.

In some cases we may as well pay extra to have "Fragile" labeled all over our packages.

I recently received a 67 SMS that cracked under the pressure of some processing machine.

Coins are fine but the case is all cracked. I suppose they'll tone or I'll come up with some other solution.image

I received a PCGS coin from Heritage and it was broken right across the center of the slab. When I called Heritage regarding it, I got a young lady who must have been new, because she thought the coin was broken and informed me that there would be a "restocking fee", if I returned it.image I talked to another CS rep and everything was taken care of nicely.
