22 Peace Dollar error help

morgansforevermorgansforever Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was going through some slabbed Peace dollars (PCGS 64's) when I came across this.

It appears to be the letter B, not sure.

I also like the die crack on the neck.

I've had this coin for years, never noticed it till an hour ago.

    Yes - I'm "green"....

This is normal, every real Peace Dollar reads, 'In God We Trvst'.

I'm well aware of "TRVST" I was refering to the stray character on the rim of the obverse, below the L in Liberty

Thank you for not telling me trust is spelled wrong.

    A dropped B, I like it.

    Will a TPG recognize this?

Yes - like I said.... I'm "green" - I had to go look at the pic of my '22. But if I had to guess, the "B" you're referring to looks like a CUD. lol!

That sure is a dropped B, there is even part of the head dress still going through it at the same angle as the real B. Nice find.

I dont know of its an error or not but it looks to me like there could possibly be another letter on the cheek... It might just be a scratch. Just a thought.

Be nice to Darth!! He's the guy running those two great threads about his grandfather's coin collection the family inherited. If you haven't seen them, take a look, it will give you chills. But Darth is a real newbie and I'm glad to see he's looking around the board trying to learn.

In any case Darth, a lot of the coinage produced by the feds in the early twentieth century was designed to look neoclassical, i.e. like Greek or Roman medals. One of the affectations that was used on some coins was Roman type lettering in which "U's" were tranformed into "V's", like they were in Roman days. So all Peace dollars have TRVST not TRUST on their obverse.

The coin Morgansforever has posted is likely an example of a "dropped letter." In this error, the engraver of the die, while handling letter punches over the die drops one onto the unfinished, non-hardened die, imprinting a misplaced letter on the die, in this case, the letter "B" from "LIBERTY." Then when the die is utilized for striking coins, the misplaced letter shows up. Most of the times these letters are pretty faint, and tough to see when they are in parts of a complex design. This dropped letter here is incredibly bold and right out in the open where it is easy to see. I'm amazed the diesinker didn't see this and allowed the die to be used in production. That's really bad quality control. Presumably there should be more of these out there. Is this a known VAM (die type)?

It doesn't look like a dropped letter to me but then again Im not exactly sure what it is. I hope it is because that would be one cool find.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a dropped "B" or "R" to me there next to the rim.

Looked in my CPG, no mention of it. I have never discovered anything that was listed in the CPG.

I'm keeping it for sure. image

Is the 'B' incuse or in relief?

Not sure what your talking about. Is it raised above the coin, it appears to be.

Tough to tell in the holder.

Thanks for all the valuable input image
