1961 and 1963 Proof sets...

Could someone clue me in on what to look for in these sets?

I have a few unopened sets coming in and I don't know squat about them.

Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. image

    Grabba,

Some proof coins were doubled in both years 61 and 63 proof sets. Cameos had more rarity. These comments are taken from Lange's recent book which covers the sets 1936-2005, A Guide Book of Modern US Proof Coin Sets.

Grabba, you are gonna have fun! I've always considered those early '60s proof coins as some of the prettiest proofs made.

This stuff is common as knats in a backyard cookout.
At least it has three silvir coins.

    "Unopened Proof Sets"

I have a hard time believing any of 57 thru 64 proof sets are unopened.
Maybe I'm just not "trusting" enough.

Considering what I have found in this guy's other unopened sets, i would say these have a good chance of being the same thing. Fingers crossed though. image

    Thanks to those who replied.

Razzle is right - besides the obvious cameos, there are varieites to look for.

I'm going from memory here -
For 1961 - the BIG DDR half (a couple of lesser DDR's), DDO quarter, DDR dime
For 1963 - DDR dimes (two, I think)

Get the Cherry pickers guides for good pics and descriptions.

And don't let people on the forums tell you there isn't anything in unopened sets. I have personally found quite a number of varieites in the unopened sets I have purchased (not on Ebay) - including multiple 61 DDR Franklins.

    Thanks cameonut.

What lettering on the reverse is doubled on those two varieties?

If you find something like I did.............. smile image FYI - These are now sitting in PCGS slabs.
EDIT: Oops, I see I had the wrong year and you're looking for varieties etc. I'm still way to happy with my snag.......image

There are around a half dozen worthwhile doubled die reverse dimes to look for in the 1963 set-the best of which is the 9-R-I. All will show the doubling most clearly on UNITED. There's also a nice doubled die reverse cent-look on AMERICA and CENT. I believe it's either a Class II or a Class IV-not the rotational doubling seen on most of the well known doubled dies but with a spread from the rim to the center of the coin.

Thanks for the info. The first batch didn't have anything worth posting about. Your post is very informative. image
