RichieURich's Baltimore show report

RichieURichRichieURich Posts: 8,653 ✭✭✭✭✭
WOW! What a show!

People: I met Forum members WTCG, Longacre, Tootawl, CharlotteDude, Cape, Mistercoinman, Orie, Ksteelheader, Yellowjacket, MrHalfDime, Coinosaurus, Goose, Julian, and Scarsdale. WTCG and his sneakers went through the bourse floor like a cat stalking its prey. Longacre, as expected, asked his share of questions and we discussed current market conditions for collector coins. Tootawl certainly lives up to his name as I thought he might hit the table row banners. CharlotteDude brought his wife and daughter one day and all three looked like they had a good time. Cape was searching out Longacre and finally met the Official Questioner of the Forum. Mistercoinman showed me some cool dimes. Orie looked like a show veteran and I was surprised to learn it was his first Baltimore show. Ksteelheader is from my area but I didn't meet him until now. Yellowjacket told me of a recent discovery which was of much interest to me. MrHalfDime was engrossed in reviewing two collections of these small coins. Coinosaurus was more impressed by a VG/AG coin I showed him than by a 2nd finest known EF of another coin. Goose brought his daughter, who would not let go of her Mint bag, even when offered money for it. Goose also identified two dimes in my inventory he formerly owned. Julian stopped by my table to check out my stock; this man has had tables at over 1,000 shows and he has as much enthusiasm as any of the rest of us. Scarsdale showed me a mega-cool trime and promised me he would find me one (Jon, I need two of them).

Cool coins I saw: The coolest coin I saw was the unique 1942-S Jefferson nickel, with the reverse of the 1941-S Large S and in the pre-war composition. All other 1942-S nickels have the mintmark over the top of Monticello rather than on the side, and also have the wartime composition. I posted information I had about this coin in an earlier thread.

Coins I sold: I sold an 1861-S Paquet reverse $20, a complete date set of large cents except for the 1804, an 1873-CC dime, an 1852-O quarter, an 1853 No Arrows quarter, an 1857 quarter with the reverse clashed with the Flying Eagle cent, an 1878-S quarter, an 1852 half and several other coins.

Coins I bought: I bought an 1823/2 quarter, an 1804 dime in VF, a nice proof 1873 Open 3 2c piece, an 1871-CC dime, several Bust and Seated quarters, and a set of half dimes pedigreed to the collection of the late Mark Smith.

Complaint Dept.: Someone complained to my wife on Thursday that a coin was "way, way overpriced". She stated that the price she gave was our rock-bottom price, and explained that pricing includes eye appeal, which was evidenced by the fact that several people had examined that coin that day. The person came back to the table a few times to appeal for a lower price, but we stuck with our price, and on Friday sold that coin at that price to a dealer.

Edit to add this paragraph: We showed "Strange Dates Wanted" including an 1815 Large cent, a 1930-D nickel, a 1944 "No P" nickel, a "1261-D" quarter, an "812" Bust half, and a "19221" Peace dollar. We also showed "If Only They Were Genuine" including copies of a 1913 Liberty nickel, 1933 double eagle, 1794 dollar, 1792 half disme, 1943 bronze cent, and a Sacagawea/quarter mule.

We had a great show and want to thank all of the Forum members who stopped by and said hello, and I apologize if I missed anyone, it was hectic from start to finish. Newsflash: my new website will be going into testing exclusively for Forum members soon, with two $100 giveaways. Keep watching the Forum for details.

For reasons of confidentiality of both my customers and my suppliers, I do not disclose who bought or sold a particular coin or the price of the transaction, unless this is a matter of public record (such as a named person bidding in person in a public auction). What I can say is that it was IMO a very attractive coin and that the buyer was not the first person who saw the coin.

Rich's VG/AG coin was quite special, the first I had ever seen. I would have offered a handsome profit, but alas, 'twas not for sale image

image Congratulations on what is most likely a outstanding aquisition. Mr. Smith was pivotal in the Logan/McCloskey half dime reference book and if he had lived long enough it might even have been call the Logan/McCloskey/Smith reference.

Nice report. I went back and re-read your thread about the 1942-S Jefferson - how did you manage to locate it?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

For a second I thought you said that you bought an 1823/2 quarter. Must be a typo. image

Thanks for the replies, folks! I enjoyed the show a lot and really enjoyed meeting you folks, too!

The 1942-S Jefferson with the reverse of the 1941-S Large S is a personal favorite of mine. After all, there aren't many unique coins in the Federal series! I ran into a dealer while he was setting up and he had a bunch of correspondence about the coin in one case. As I looked further, he had the nickel there also! He has it on consignment from its current owner who has owned it for 20 years. The price was a bit much for me, but it was a great coin, in Fine, and much better than the pictures I posted. For a Fine, it has very strong rims, leading me further toward the view that it was a coin to test the dies early in 1942, before the decision was made to convert to the wartime composition.

Numisma, it was not a typo, I did buy an 1823/2 quarter, plus some other cool Bust quarters.

I know you were serious, but I did have to read that two or three times before it sank it. Congratulations on a great show.

    Rich,

Great report and a great show. I caught you on Friday on my way out after seven hours on the bourse. It was a pleasure meeting you and discussing a mercury dime in my "Rogue's Gallery." I looked in Lange's book on Merc's. He didn't have a picture of that year since it was so scarce none were available for a photo. His pic of a 1923 was from counterfeit dies from Russia??? Mine is a tooling job I imagine.

    Again, great to meet you.

Hi Garrow, it was great to meet you too. I would still like a look at that dime, can you pm me a photo or bring it along to the next show there?

I could certainly bring it to the next show, but I might broaden my skills by attempting some photography and sending it on to you.
