Can you guess the grade of the 66 Mantle?

Guys

As some of you may know I am building a 1966 Topps baseball set raw.

I figured it wiser to buy the Mantle graded, that way I would have no worries.

Can you guess the grade of this example?

Edited to add: the bottom left corner is all there it appears funky due to the scan. The card has no creases. image

I would guess a nice looking 4. That card would look nice in a binder. Great centering!!!

The reason i bought it was because of the centering. I saw about 10 recently and so many of them are OC.

I'll post the grade tomorrow morning.

    I'd say 3.

  • Initially, I thought 3.

Centering sure helps the eye appeal. I would say it's a 3, but with the centering and color as good as it is, it's probably in a 4 holder. Amazing how much I can overlook on a card when the centering is good. I don't blame you for picking that copy up.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I'll say 4 as well. Fun project winpitcher! I'm happy to have a '66 Mantle "back" now (used to have one long ago, sold it during college for the $, typical story.) image

It should be a 4, but would bring 5 money on ebay due to the centering. Nice card.

Ok guys can you believe it is a 3!

The guy had 4's and 5's and the 3 IMO was the best!

The 4's he had had crunched corners or the centering was dog.

    the 5 was well OC.

This 3 IMO has honest wear, and is centered decently. The missing ink on the Micks face is the only thing that bothered me.

It fits nicely into the set I'm building.

I thought myself that it is undergraded.

btw I bought it from Levi.

It came within 36 hrs of my purchase. I did not have to bid against anyone for a raw OC possibly doctored may never come card.

Yes I paid 4 money for it.

    Good for you.

I would have too (paid 4 money for that). Centering trumps everything, imo and from what I have seen over the past few years, so does most vintage cards on eBay (regardless of grade) - i.e., in getting a premium price.

    Steve,
That has to be one of the nicest 3's I have seen,I would never
have guessed it being lower then a 4.Nice pickup.

    Thanks Jake and Steve.

    Good for you.
  • Hi Steve, I think you were fortunate to get a card with PSA 9 centering and PSA 3 corners. Exceptional eye appeal.
  • P.S.

I think $100 is a very fair price for the card.

    Nice pickup Steve.

I had figured it was a 3, but a very, very nice one at that. Between the issues on Micks face and the corners it seemed a bit much for anything higher.

That being said I would have paid PSA 4 money for it also. You just cant beat low grade cards (especially of the Mick) when the centering and eye appeal are as solid as that card.

    Congrats image

Here is an example of eye appeal over grade that I picked up 2 weeks ago. It has all the attributes of a very nice PSA 7 and possibly PSA 8 but has a tiny, almost undetectable 1/4 surface wrinkle at the very bottom center.
