Notice: eBay policy change on upside down edge lettered Washington dollars

I can't locate the original thread where I mentioned discussing this with safeharbor, but here's the policy change (and I noted yesterday that the only listings on ebay with the words "upside down edge error" were mine)

Any George Washington dollars with the inverted edge-inscriptions that are marketed as "errors" in either the title or description will be ended and removed from the site. These coins may be listed on eBay, however they may not be marketed as error, mistake or rare.
Please see our Coins and Currency policy at the following page:

  • Now if I could only locate the damn policy page lol.
  • They won't allow you to list these coins as "rare" but you can list all your common date 20th century junk as "rare." That's ebay-acceptable.image

Incorrect. You CAN list the upside down Washingtons as "rare", since eBay defines rare as in the eye of the beholder. You cannot, however, list them as "errors", since eBay is now applying the industry-accepted definition of the term to the listings.

Yes, I see my mistake. That might be taking the policy too far, because eBay isn't in the coin business to judge what is rare or what isn't. To be certain, if someone was proactive about the "modern junk" as some of us were about the Washington dollars, eBay might ammend their policy to include prohibiting the marketing of other items as rare, too.

In all probability the "upside down" version should be 50% (+ or -) of all the George Washington dollars produced. However the "upside down" coins may not be as rare as the "upside up" coins! Does anyone know what the policy is on the upside up coins? Or the percentage of upside up versus upside down?

Well, they're down to only seventeen active listings for "washington error upside down." image

A glance at the 3500+ ended listings shows that prices have dropped considerably, and many "errors" go unsold, which suggests that others were educating buyers long before ebay woke up and got a clue.
  • Yeah, my "NOT ERROR NOT RARE" auctions were piggybacked to the other listings, and many an angry seller sent me nastygrams. When ebay first yanked all the error and rare listings, mine was the only one left--and I thought that looked very weird. Then I received word of the policy change and knew why, but I would have yanked mine too.

And not all the sellers were scammers either. Many emailed me telling me they just "got some from the bank" and they checked ebay, and they noticed the hundreds of "rare upside down edge letter errors" and thought they had something special, so they listed theirs the same way. So this misinformation snowballs. The real scammers inadvertently increased the supply of "upside down errors" a thousand fold, decreased the prices, AND forced a policy change. Honesty=the best policy!
  • I wonder if there's any change now that PCGS is recognizing "Position A" and "Position B." It's no longer an error, but now it is a recognized variety. *sigh*

No change. PCGS isn't looking to ebay to help them designate coins.
  • And now we have the Adams upside down lettering coins. People are getting wiser though and there are few bids on those coins.
