Anybody Use Oxygen Absorbers??

Does anybody use oxygen absorbers in their safes? I'm not sure if they might keep silver coins from getting milk spots or keep them from toning. Thanks for any experience with these that you can share. How about vacuum sealers?

Never heard of oxygen absorbers. I would suggest silica or some other type of moisture absorber.

No ... but I work with a few!

Sulfur tends to cause the oxidation reaction. Good luck removing oxygen. The air we breath is 20.9% oxygen. Your concern should be more with moisture.

Vacuum packing is fine. But a few questions.

    1) What is the moisture vapor permeability of the bag that you'll use? In other words, how much moisture will permeate through the plastic bag per day?
    2) How often do you plan to go into the bag to look at your coins?

On a few of my items, I have a plastic box that is sealed with gaskets. I drilled a couple of holes and purge it with dry nitrogen. It isn't the greatest setup, but it keeps a few coins and my paper items such as my Columbian Expo tickets dry. It helps that I sell (or did sell) oxygen analyzers so I can test the gas concentration to make sure it's purged. I also have nitrogen readily available to purge the box regularly. If I didn't have these two things, I wouldn't be doing this.

I looked into it. You would have to have a heck of a seal to keep more oxygen from getting right back in.
