Grade this Type 2 SLQ

There was a thread asking for grading opinions on a Type 2 SLQ yesterday. It seems I was way low on the grade compared to others replying to the thread.

I've had this 1917 T2 for several years and have always considered it a VF35-EF40 or so. Am I way off base?

    Possibly, but I see no hairlines. The color of the coin is light than the photo indicates.

    Here's the other posters Type 2 SLQ. People were grading this from VF35 to EF45. What am I missing here? Should this coin be graded higher that the 1917 T2?

    OK ok! EF-40....the other coin you posted has a LOT more wear on it...this is why I'm not a professional grader!

    That's what I would have graded it ten - twenty years ago... but with grade inflation,
    I'm sure its an AU 50.

    Also decent strike for a Type 2 SLQ - nice shield rivots [ bosses ].

    Wow, no kidding. Has the requirement that a coin possess at least some luster to be considered AU been eliminated? I thought that even EF45 coins should show a trace of luster. I guess grade inflation is much worse than I ever thought. Seriously, I couldn't ever in good conscience sell this coin as an AU. It appears grade inflation has destroyed my ability to grade circulated coins. And that's a damn shame.

    That coin is not AU both on account of lack of luster and wear having reached most of the coin at least to a slight degree. It looks like a nice XF40 to me.

    I would say the wear is consistent with a ef40 coin.

    nice XF45. It still has luster in the protected area's a bit more and I would say AU50.

    I haven't looked at other posts but my photo-grade indicates AU53, plus or minus a number or two.
    The brads on the shield, the date and the wing feathers all look great.
    I created my own system by going to an auction house, un-named, and finding good pics for each
    grade and making a file for them, 2 or 3 for each grade, on my hard drive. It was a lot of work but worth it.
