ANA Charoltte show report

OK I'm going to give this show report thing a try.

Arrived here in Charlotte yesterday afternoon just in time for dealer setup. Met up right away with SEGOJA and Fatman. Right out of the box we see Laura setting up and went by to see if she had any new "Modern Crap". Well we got a very stern I don't have time for you boys right now, leave me alone. Took most of the dealers a while to get settled in and we went looking at the sea of slabbed Morgans, gold and other high end coins.

I headed over to the bargain section, actually found some dealers that drove in and brought proof sets. Picked some nice 56-71 sets, a few SC$ and some medals. Dealer day was SLOW...

James, John, Cliff, Blake (a paper money guy) and myself headed out for dinner. I'll leave that interesting adventure for someone else to post about.

This morning headed back to the show. There were more people walking the bourse floor today, but the general consensus from the dealers I talked to is that this is the worse ANA spring show that they had ever been to. I picked some some nice medals today also.

Jeff (JWCOINS) said there are not many cameo modern crap coins to be had, so give me the chicken!

I guess Sego is a real coin dealer now, he was drinking martinis, but the olives had to be stuffed with blue cheese!

Even Irma from Teletrade wanted some face time with the chicken!

I'm sure there will be more tomorrow.

Would it be worth my time to go on Sunday? I know a lot of the dealers leave after Saturday. It's a 100 mile drive for me.

I met Marty and the Chicken today in front of the Scarsdale table (Thanks again for the Cook Island

). I picked up some So-Called Dollars, cherrypicked an AH Kennedy and a 21-D Morgan VAM, picked up a slabbed 16-D Merc for MrsSpud (who was up stairs all day working the Registration area) and a few other coins. I tried panning for gold, but didn't find any. Got to see a lot of Bechtler gold coins from the Bechtler family private collection, as well as the 1913 V Nickel. The show isn't too crowded, but isn't dead either. I'm having fun

Picked up a few good deals from Leon early in the day. Other than that a rather boring show.

Here is a very brief show synopsis...

Setup was pathetic. Transactions were slow to come by and the floor lacked much of the "buzz" that accompanies many of the major shows. Many of the larger buyers did not make the trip to Charlotte and instead were waiting to make their presence in Baltimore next week.

The public attendace on Friday was fairly weak, although the weather may have played a major factor in that outcome. Business amongst dealers picked up a bit while almost every dealer reported very weak sales to the non-dealers. Action of most of the bourse floor was sluggish although the Budget section was semi-crowded.

General public attendance on Saturday looked decently strong, as around midday the line to register did stretch quite a length. There were also plenty of youngsters in attendance and participating in the youth treasure hunt. Despite these observations, most of the non budget area dealers still reported weak retail sales while having to deal with waves of "tire-kickers" and "lookey-loos". Actually, some dealers experienced some really funny moments involving members of the general public and their lack of "ettiquite".

My opinion is that Charlotte, or most of the other cities in the Southeast are not great host cities for large conventions.

By the way, where's a picture of Laura with the rubber chicken?

How many collectors will go to back-to-back shows in two different cities? Not many.

And given the choice between Charlotte ANA and Baltimore, how many collectors would choose Charlotte?

It should not be surprising that Charlotte was slow.

I went to that coin show.
I mainly wanted to see the 1913 nickel, but I also enjoyed the other collector exhibits, especially the Bechtler gold display.
Didn't buy much, just some reference books from a guy named Kyle Vick.

I guess it was OK, and I'm glad I went, but I don't think I'll go to any more ANA sponsored shows.
I prefer the atmosphere and collector material at local coin shows.

The show was just OK.

Dinner with The Mad One and the other boys was good....we can't talk about the Cook islands coin that I gave to the waitress (She had a good Freudian slip, turned red and literally never came back to the table...we had already paid the bill) I'll leave the details of that to the folks taht heard the slip, but it was good and related to the Cook Island coin.

The fun part was after dinner....a few beers later.

Picture three 6'5" + guys fitting into the back seat of a sub-compact....it really took a long time to get the door closed. As soon as we got one side stuffed in, the door wouldn't close on the other side. We tried it again the other way, but that didn't work either. After a few one way streets we finally made it to the first hotel....the back door opened and it was like the snake in a tennis ball can..out came a coin collector with full force, he had been stuffed in so tight it was like an explosion. Laughed our arses off.

Well once one was out it was still an adventure getting the other two out. Finally after a few minutes of moving 50 years old body parts around, they emerged unscathed.

Good times for sure, but the show was slow.

I trust Baltimore will be much much better.

No matter what anyone said, this mustta been one helluva show.

You'll definitely want to catch Legend when they can devote the attention you deserve.

I was beside a table today where a gentleman was trying to sell some nice PCGS holdered coins to a dealer who offered 90% of bid. The customer said "You can't buy holdered coins using Greysheet!". The dealer went into a mini-rant, and said to the guy "how many like that do YOU want to buy?". The guy said "I don't want to buy any, I want to sell." The dealer said "Do you know what it costs to rent a table? $1200 for the table, $300 for a room, $500 to travel......YOU try doing this for nothing!" The customer had already walked off, and the dealer proceeded to explain to the next customer how unreasonable the man was. Ahhhh.......commerce.

Add in the NCAA tournament in a basketball crazy state like North Carolina is is no wonder that things were slow at the show.

The ANA should have taken the tournament and the upcoming Baltimore show into consideration and moved the show to another location.
Maybe they will learn a lesson from this.

Despite the laid-back atmosphere, I had a great time and probably bought my way out of it. The Bechtler family's collection of Bechtlers was really interesting, and Don and I found a previously unknown variety, which was certainly worth the trip.

This was the first major show I have ever been to. I saw one guy with double eagles, about 15 by 10 stacked about 8 deep. I figured that was a half million in bullion alone, I was impressed. There were more Morgans than I knew what to do with, but the pl and dmpl's still are rather hard to come by, especially the better dates. I thought the show was great, the dealers I spoke to said business was slightly slow to about average. I hope that there are future large shows in Charlotte, it is about the only large city close enough to me to drive to and big enough to host something like this.

I attended the Charlotte show on Friday and Saturday morning. Luckily, I flew down from New Jersey on Thursday, and beat the bad weather. Although I've read a lot of negative comments about the show, Charlotte is a beautiful, modern city, with a bunch of excellent restaurants within a few blocks of the convention center. There was a lot of nice material on the floor, if you took the time to look for it. My wife was lucky enough to stumble across a deal of beautiful Mercury dimes in green PCGS holders that a dealer had just purchased. She got two of them, although the rest were grabbed up by a very large auction company.
I bought the new Redbook, but was unable to find Ken Bressett to get it autographed. I attended the Heritage auctions on Thursday night, and Friday afternoon. Incredibly, when the commemoratives came up I was the only bidder on the floor!

Overall, attendance was light. Maybe Michigan is right about the NCAA's going on at the same time. We had a good time, got to see some friends from North Carolina and Georgia that we haven't seen for awile, bought some nice coins, saw Harry Laibstain's neck brace, and Dave Wnuck (fully dressed) and enjoyed the city.
