1942 Toned Walker in a 4th Tier holder... (edit: reduced image size: 300K Image (1200 x 600))

lsicalsica Posts: 1,623 ✭✭✭✭
This coin is graded MS-66 in a 4th Tier (NNC) holder. Sold it last week, buyer decided they didn't like it so it's
coming back to me. Wondering what people here think of it

Doesn't look like it in hand. And it really is a virtually mark free coin from what I could see/remember. I'll look it over again when I get it. I may send it off to somewhere else for their opinion (probably ANACS if just for cost/speed reasons)

You need to downsize your images, first of all they come nowhere near fitting on a 15 inch monitor, secondly images that large lose the affect of being able to see the entire coin at once and by the time you scroll and scroll and scroll you've forgotten what the rest of the coin looked like and thirdly its just plain rude to post photos like this constantly. After your last shenanigans I said I wouldn't open another one of your threads.

Why did you then? Especially since I have the image screen size and file size right in the title?

It is tough to grade from an image that size.

Constructive criticism noted and heeded. I shrunk the image to 1200x600 300K

  • I think the strike is weak but the color is nice.

After seeing the coin in hand did the buyer think the stacking mark on the breast was wear?

I can't stand those stacking marks on the breast on these coins. It seems to wreck a lot of them visually for me. I also see a similar mark near the end of her left hand fingertips -- are these also stacking marks?

The image of the obverse doesn't make me eager to jump at this coin, but I bet it looks great in hand. The reverse looks to have an attractive toning pattern, and appears well struck.

Don't know. He just said he didn't like it and was going to return it.

I suspect the buyer thought they had a rip due to the third-world holder and had visions of crossing over for a nice profit...until they got the coin.

    AU58 with unattractive brown toning.

It may be original, but it's not attractive, it has some rub and a nicer example can be readily obtained from multiple sources.

Sorry, but that's what I see.

How are you guys arriving at MS63, 64, or, say, 65? I see a pretty limited number of hits, which I think would allow a high grade. Are you looking at strike? Surface condition, or luster?

that stacking rub or wear pretty much limits the grade.

Color me simple, but outside of the whack on the breast, I like the piece and the bronze coloring...

How can any of you possibly grade this coin as mint state? The obverse of the coin has toned to an overall brown. There are several breaks in the brown toning where the coin has picked up obvious wear.

I agree with 291fifth. The coin shows wear on the high points, and I couldn't call it uncirculated.

There is a point where I would take away from the grade for unattractive toning, and this coin would qualify, in my opinion. Consequently, I would probably evaluate this one as AU53.

If the toning were attractive (in my opinion), I might give it a higher grade, but it would still not be uncirculated.
