What's the use of even having a credit card or Paypal account if you can't use it for the occasional Ebay impulse purchase?!image

  • If I were selling that coin, on FeeBay, I wouldnt want a huge chunk of money going to paypal. someone with that kind of money can overnight a cashiers check.

It's moot, since he can't accept PayPal for that coin anyway. There's a $10K transaction limit.

I apologize if posting an image of this coin was inappropriate.

I do believe both of rwyarmch's comments were said with tongue-in-cheek, and gave me a chuckle, as well as an opportunity to ogle a beautiful coin. Thanks, rwyarmch.

Isn't that the same one that was posted here before by TDN, there was a discussion on the color?

Oops... It was posted by Mreureka and is a different coin (I think - you know the wonders of modern photography).
  • Well, Let's do the math. You buy a beautiful coin for $6000. You list it on ebay for $6600. A 10% markup if some bottom feeder doesn't nag you for a better price. Really 10% is about the limit the market will bear.
Someone hits the bin and voila! it's sold.
Now comes the bitter pill. Ebay and paypal combined take 7% right off the top. They make $462 and you make $162. Fun eh!
Yet without paypal being offered sales are substantially reduced. What to do? Dave W

    Dave,
Interesting example. That is exactly why I don't accept credit card payments. If you notice other than Heritage(Limit of $10,000) none of the major auction houses accept credit card payments to my knowledge. I understand the convenience factor that everyone refers to and I used to take Bidpay(the buyer would pay for the convenience) until PAYPAL put them out of business. There are certain venues that credit card payments do not lend itself to. How many dealers that you know that will let you buy bullion with a credit card. Keep in mind if I were to sell this coin with a credit card(If they would take a payment that large) my slice would be somewhere in the $3450 range. Simply unacceptable IMHO.

My intention is not to turn this into a PAYPAL vs. No PAYPAL bashing contest but rather to state my opinion on an interesting observation.
  • It would seem that since ebay owns paypal it would benefit all parties if they made paypal mandatory and reduced the total fee to say 5%. Splitting the 10% profit 50-50 would still be tough but a lot more palatable.
I do try through other venues such as this forum to advise prospective buyers to visit my website to buy the same coin for about 7% less. Dave W

I might buy it if the seller would guarantee that it would cross at ACG.
  • The real problem with PayPal and/or credit cards is this:

You haven't actually been paid until 2 months elapses. They buyer can charge back the transaction up to 60 days later. It is like waiting 2 months to see if a check clears.

And there's practically nothing you can do about it. Your PayPal account and associated checking account are both frozen until the issue is resolved.
