My brother is retired NYPD sergeant, who has his own security firm...He's been doing security for events, concerts, bodyguarding, etc for over 25 years.

I believe he gets around $45-$50 an hour for armed security and less for unarmed.

    Here is his site...

  • When I work these type of off duty gigs I am in plain clothes and blend in with the crowd no different than when I work high profile protection gigs, you don't see me until I want you to.
There are plenty of private companies around who employ off duty cops and your fee will vary from one location to another.

  • As a security company owner, I do provide many of the services mentioned. For small temp services I usually hire off duty police officers myself. I have no experience in New York City but in other large markets, i.e LA, Chicago and Phoenix, we normally charge between $25-$40 an hour for services of this type.

Starting police officers make no where near $75k a year, Usually $32,000 - $47,000.

BY the way, I understand your need for a sense of security. However keep in mind that if anything happens it's still you liability insurance that will need to cover it. These off duty police are being hired directly by you, they are your employees for those hours you contracted them for, thus your responsibility for losses. I suggest you contract with a company that provides the services, at least you will have some recourse.

I think this is exactly true. These people have few restraints against harming anyone. An armed bodyguard just raises the level of violence that it takes in order to take the coins away. >>

Not to mention, with an armed escort. You might as well hold up large signs that say "Hit me""I'm the one with millions in this case""Look there is only one person to beat and it's all yours""Come and get it"

but but but....all the dealers on these forums state on what they would have done if they would have been armed themselves!!!
Surely they could have fended off the attackers by pulling a "high noon" with their concealed weapons, right?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I'm waiting for the outcome of the reward- what's it up to now $106,000- for a paltry 4 mil in coins?

seems to me the insurance company does not think the value of the coins is as high as one might feel.

they may wait it out for a few years.

where's TDN tonight- I'm waitin on a phone call from him or sumthin like it....

Actually, it might be an interesting side business to set up. You have the law enforcement background and the numismatic contacts. Organize the protection and take a cut of the action without ever leaving the comfort of your keyboard. image
  • over the years I have watched folks carry literally millions in a grocery bag, looking like a bum in the street- never once getting hit on by 'thugs'.

I walked Long Beach show a few weeks ago with enough 'stuff' to make a mouse sqeak real loud- but yet I was not even approached- maybe it's the way a person holds himself, look and act like you have a few million on you and you will be robbed- act like a bum and odds are you won't be bothered.

if the FUN show is so hot for the thieves- it might be financially advantageous to not go- do it all from a computer.

    bout like we do today..

Just like the telephone revolutionized the business for many people, so is the internet doing the same. Further, keeping a low profile is not only smart to prevent getting ones coins and valuables from being stolen, it helps prevent one and ones family from being followed, beaten, murdered.

Anyone ever stop to consider who some people are who frequent message boards that either have no profile, or who simply lurk, read, take notes and who some of them might be or what they "could" be?

For $300 you can arm yourself and protect yourself.

<< <i>Although I think it is tragic that that coin dealer got robbed in front of his hotel after the FUN show, I cannot stop thinking that it could have possibly been prevented with a little advanced planning. I was speaking with a police officer over the weekend, and I explained to him the FUN situation and asked whether off-duty police offers could be hired to provide protection in transit for persons carrying $4 million in a briefcase. He said absolutely, and here are the standard rates for his department:

The officer has to be hired for a minimum of 5 ½ hours of duty at time and a half pay. It does not matter if the officer works for 5 minutes or 5 ½ hours, he still needs to get paid the full amount. I am not sure if this is a Police Union thing, but it sounds like it.

Although I have no idea how much a cop makes per year (I didn’t ask), it might be safe to assume that a first year officer (who is most likely to take these sorts of gigs) probably makes around $75,000 per year. Therefore, for a 2080 hour year, that comes out to $36/hr. At time and a half, that is $54/hr. So in total, providing a real police escort (not one of those “rent an overweight bouncer” type of places) will cost $298. To me, incurring that cost seems to be worth it, even if you have to hire the cop a few times during the course of the show week. But I am not a rare coin dealer trying to make ends meet, so I cannot say for sure. What does everyone think? >>

Rookie or non multiple-year police officers generally do not make anywhere close to $75,000 per year, even in Northern California where police salaries are among the highest in the country.

Regarding the FUN robbery...I do not believe the outcome would have been different if the victims were carrying weapons (one gun or arsenal for a battalion) since perpetraitors use the element of surprise to "shock" their victims. A firearm would have been useless for defense.

According to several coin show organizers where actual law enforcement personnel are hired for security, the average rate is about $50 per hour per officer.

Those "overweight bouncer" types often do a better job scaring off any potential trouble than most off-duty ununiformed police officers would. As for those Blackwater Security personel as Cladiator cited...the events in Iraq have demonstrated that they are definitely vulnerable to attack despite their expertise and armament.

<< <i>I agree that the estimate for police pay is WAY high, but never the less, double what you figured would have been a deal that night. Of course I live in small town Oklahoma (GO SOONERSimage) and I bet our Chief of police doesn't make what first year rookies make in large cities. Whatever the pay, it isn't enough for sure. Cops and Teachers are probably the most underpaid professions in the country. Of course, the good ones are worth twice or thrice what they make and the bad ones aren't worth hootimageimage >>

I agree that police are underpaid. On the other hand I believe that school teachers are fairly well paid, perhaps over-compensated for their required qualifications. It's my opinion, but that's another discussion for another day.

When the reality of Dying within seconds hits home, you'd be surprised just how fast you brain works.

People can talk all the bravado BS they want to here. Coins mean NOTHING TO A DEAD PERSON - NOTHING AT ALL.

Sorry but Cops don't make $75.000 a year either.

How do you figure that? From what I understand, all you need to become a cop is one semester of college education if even that. Most likely just a high school diploma. Most teachers have at least some sort of college degree. The reason that cops are underpaid isnt because they are overqualified, but for the obvious risk they take in their day-to-day job. Then again, the job descriptions of cops and teachers are becoming more and more similar every day...

While some may take this offensively, they shouldn't... but Ive always found it disturbing that we give the guns and almost limitless power on the streets to some of the least educated people in our country. If you've ever been harrassed by a dumb jerk cop, you know what I'm talking about when you're sitting there saying "Yes sir, no sir, no sir, yes sir..."

You need a bachelors degree where I live to be a cop.
