Unfortunately, just like the 1943 Copper Cents,
Two Headed coins, gold plated coins, etc. etc........

These "Upside Down" and "Rightside Up" edge
coins will haunt coin shops for another 50 years.

I just got off the phone with an AP reporter who
was a bit confused about that aspect of the coins,
although they were able to understand the Plain
Edge coins missing the Edge Lettering Operation...

I is was thinking a set was one from each Mint (P & D). To have a "set", you have to have upside down and right side up from each MINT--four coins.

I wonder if the "up" and "down" edge inscriptions will be random on the proof coins also.

According to the Mint, the Proofs
will be struck using a different
    method, and the lettered edges
will "read up" on all of them.

Think about it - what would a proof
coin look like if it went thru the same
operation's that the BU's go thru?

Coin World wrote about this - I'm
    giving the short version -

( from Paul Gilkes, Staff Writer )

For Proof Coins, there is a special collar with a three-part edge collar so as a coin
is struck, it also get's stamped on the edge by the three piece collar (which is actually
    jut another die).

"Once the coin is struck, the three segments of the collar will seperate to permit ejection of
the coin wihout damage occuring to the edge from the raised letters on the collar"

"The bottom die has been modified to include a cam shoulder that seperates the three-piece
collar during the coin ejection cycle."

So, the Proofs are struck, with the Lettered Edges, very differently than the BU's......

So in order to have a complete year set one will need 20 coins: 1 ea. upside right P&D and upside down P&D and one S; times 4. It's getting more and more difficult too keep up with all of these mint products. Not to mention a possible Silver $ and crap image I forgot about the Satin finish mint sets, that's 16 more coins. image So for 2007 alone if the Mint gets authorization to produce a Silver coin too (and with multiple finshes) we're talking at least 44 coins. Give me a break! image

I have only searched through two rolls and 23 of the 50 coins had the edge lettering upside down. Guess I should put them on ebay as sets and make a killing too. People really should do at least a little research before buying anything claimed to be an error. sheesh.
