Wisconsin extra leafs haven't moved....

in a while. At least in the MS65 and lower grades. Are the coins getting ready to make a strong move higher or are we going to see the value drop? I remember last year when the values were changing almost on a weekly basis. Ideas?

    TTT.

I have an equiring mind as well. I was expecting them to make a huge jump like they did last yr in Feb when the mint released the screw ball story about what happened. At that time, NGC 67 set reached 10k. I figured the coin world story would make these things fly again.

IMHO, the Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters are undergoing a firming process. The AU's through MS 66 have shown gains in the last few weeks. The NGC MS 67 sets are seldom offered but do look healthier now than in the last six months. The real sleeper to me in today's market are the NGC coins that were graded in the last 8 months or so. Back then, NGC tightened their grading significantly to come pretty much on the same PCGS grade level with maybe the exception of NGC's MS 67 coins. Remember," buy the coin and not the holder". I have seen bith NGC and PCGS coins that IMO fell short of their respective grades.

Both of the Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters are truly rare with what I beleive to be less than 20,000 of a combined total mintage for both coins and it has truly been an uphill battle among the coin experts as to whether the coins began their lives as a mere mechanical error or were the product of someone's intentional beginnings at the die shop of the Denver Mint.

Thanks to Rick Snow and Chris Polliod and their relentless efforts, the Truth is known!! Both coins are the result of intentional beginnings. Rick and Chris have greatly enhanced the foundation for these coins by sharing their professional insight. The future interest and values of each variety will see gains for years to come !! Whether each is regarded as a Variety or a Type Coin, many of the 150 million State Quarter collectors and Variety Collectors will be desiring to have a set of these low mintage quarters in the near future.

I beleive that the Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters will in a rather short period of time be embraced by the serious numismatists and be equal to or surpass the current values of the famous 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent in years to come. Only time will tell !! This too is one reason why coin collecting is such a great hobby. I hope that many of the young coin collectors can obtain one or both of the quarters before the prices escalate in the future.

Have a great Day collecting coins. Mark.

One thing is certain : No matter how much water you add, you aren't going to grow any more leaves on them.

If you are looking at PCGS prices, I think they didn't follow the drop in prices last fall. The prices are catching back up to their reported values. As Mark said, firming up.

That pop report is rather interesting. I haven't seen both TPGs reports together in a while and found the results very encouraging in supporting the firming of price before the next rise. In the last six months there really haven't been a lot of new coins graded and those that were had a number of AU ones mixed in. That should show the true rarity of them and that most of the holdouts holding them raw are finally SLOOOOOOOWLY submitting them. I truly wonder, though how many of the coins in the pop reports are crackouts or cross overs. I am sure that would artificially increase the pops across the board.

Hello Perry, sometime in the near future us coin population trackers will finally come to the same conclusion that you have noted concerning the low, low mintage of both the Wisconsin Extra High and Low Statehood Quarters. IMHO the Party Is truly over !! The days of huge raw coin submissions of 100's of coins week after week is over.

I can not speak of any holdouts in Arizonia but I think I know of most of the few groupings here in Texas. I said "most" and not "all" of these people in Texas. With few exceptions, all have had most or all of their Extra Leaf Quarters graded. As the scarcity and value became clear, the few holdouts have choosen to be silent and continue to hold their coins off the market. Many want to keep their rare coins until they reach retirement age !! I for one have decided to have all of my raw coins graded either by NGC, PCGS or ANACS which is 50 miles from my office. That has been accomplished over the last 9 months. I know of none of the owners that are anxious to "unload" their coins. If so, I trust that they might contact me.

Perry, the only significant population report that is not included in your message is that of ANACS. They last reported having graded 500 or so as of Nov., 2005. Still, that isn't very many coins. Perry, your area of Texas... North of Austin was one of my very best areas to find Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters. I have a very fond memory of Round Rock, Tx the day that the national news media was announcing the very valuable Wisconsin Quarters that a few had an extra leaf on them and how valuable they were !! Thank you Bank One !! Do I need to say anymore !!

I do know of a collector/investor in Missouri who I understand has several Wisconsin Extra Leaf Quarters and is holding them until he reaches retirement age.

The bottom line.... if you are still waiting to buy your Extra Leaf Quarters thinking that they will plummet in price you are playing a very dangerous game IMO. True, a large quantity could always appear but I think that even 1,000 coins could be absorbed rather quickly. There are several of us who truly believe as Rick Snow and Chris Polliod and Rob Weiss and Brett Sadovnick and many others that these coins are rare and will appreciate over time. Alot of ground has already been covered in only a short period of time !! They will be a classic collector coin in the near future.

Perry, thanks for your insight. I hope to meet you in Round Rock someday !!
Have a great day !! Mark.

I really think this has been a no-brainer from the beginning. As Mark said "150 million State Quarter collectors", Limited supply of the extra leafs, very localized distribution, which reduced the possibility of finding them in circulation.......etc.

IMHO, These will continue to rise in value.

I for one have taken this lull in prices to try and finish some sets. I ended up with 17 MS-66 low leafs that did not have a partner and have been bargain shopping to match them up with a high leaf.

The excellent write-up in the new Cherrypickers Guide and other publications, as well as the anticipated book from Rick Snow will continue to add to the value of these coins. By the way Rick I still intend on getting my story to you. I have just been working to many hours to take the time. Don't leave me out.... Remember that is the chapter that will have Mark in tears.image

As far as the populations go.... I have graded all of my initial findings....with the exception of 3 sets.

I sold one set very early on to a guy I work with. That set has not been graded and would probably be a 64.

I gave a set to another guy I work with and I would venture to say that set was a 65 or 66. He is a good friend....

For my brothers 50th birthday I gave him a perfect set that would probably grade 67. I have been thinking about buying those back from him at current prices.

I currently have 5 raw coins that I have not sent in. I have picked these up from ebay auctions when I see one I like at a good price.

So to wrap this up.......IMHO these coins are a winner........And as my username says......I am holding mine for retirement......They will always be worth a quarter!!!!

    Scott

Mine are for retirement also and as of now I have 44 of them. I am still looking to buy but have not found much of late that I am interested in so I may have to just stay with what I have now.

I have one set that remains ungraded - mostly because they have ghastly scratches on them. The rest are graded and I intend on selling some down the road when mt wife and I build our dream house. BUT, the majority of the coins I have will remain in hand - at least my 65s and 66 set. I know of one of my ex-co-workers who up until 6 months ago still had 50 or so still ungraded. I haven't spoken to her since then and their status may have changed. I do agree that these will be incredibly rare in the context of the number of collectors of the SHQs and we shall see where the prices go. I just hope there are enough floating around that they will remain collectable!!
