If you were Acetone, what would you do to this coin?

Will acetone remove the black gunk on this coin, without ruining it?

Advice and opinions welcome here.

    It's hard to say. It looks like it could be light corrosion, and if thats the case acetone won't help. If it's just dirt, acetone should take it off no problem. It's worth a shot, acetone won't hurt the coin.

    the concern I'd have there is that the copper under the gooey stuff will be a different color than the copper that has been out in the air and stuff for so long.

    You may end up with a coin that has no gunk, but looks spotted.

    You may want to do a thread search on olive oil and mineral oil- some here (including me) have been able to lift some pretty serious gunk off of copper with those.

    I bet acetone will help stop the corrosion from getting worse- but I also bet that you'll end up with whitish spots and streaks where the green marks currently are....

    My question: Is the coin of significant enough numismatic value to make it even worth considering an attempt to improve the surfaces?? I'm no student of Irish coinage from WWII, but I can't imagine this coin has anything but sentimental value.

    That looks like hard crusted corrosion...which will not be removed by acetone IMO.

    I seriously doubt acetone will get, what appears to me to be, encrusted material off the coin. I'd leave it alone if it were my coin.

    Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

    I probably should have added that this coin along with another (same date) will be made into cufflinks.

    This is the only reason I would consider trying to clean it up...
