<< <i>Most of the coins look AT and not even good AT. Unfortunately some of the coins look very similar to coins that you already see in some TPG holders. >>

IMO, that's only unfortunate if the similar looking coins already in TPG holders are NT. If the ones already in TPG holders are market acceptable AT, then this guy's better work may be "market acceptable" and he's just following in the footsteps of other market acceptable doctors.... >>

Maybe we should go back to the days when dealers dipped everything!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Some of these are cartoon-like, but I'm guessing that as he refines his talent he'll get closer and closer to market acceptable.

If TPGs say AT is market acceptable and people are willing to pay for AT color (in and out of TPG slabs), then doctors will step in to fill the demand. If AT is not acceptable then saying so should start with the ANA or TPGs IMO. And yes, you can always dip that color off image

A while back I was very upset when an ATed Gobrecht ended up in a PCGS holder however many people seemed to have no problem with it. I'm starting to think that many people think AT in TPG holders is perfectly fine....

As long as people are going to pay STUPID money for toned coins (in or out of slabs), the coin docs will keep making toned coins. The will get better and better at it.

Which was my point. This guy is getting better with each new batch he lists. That Frankie I posted is very close. The look is almost there. If it were a 1950's business strike rather than a 1961 proof, it might very well fool a TPG.

Do you think TPG graders are fooled when they slab AT? Or is it more that they think it's market acceptable and that's good enough? Perhaps the graders aren't being fooled and don't look to BB good AT at all.

So far he has very few bids. After all of his listing fees, the cost of chemicals and labratory equipment and his time, he is going to lose money on this little venture.

<< <i>Russ has a point, maybe not with this guy getting too good to fool anyone, but if people do come up with a "recipe" to artificially tone coins where graders cannot decipher them from NT, it will put an end to premiums for toned coins, and everyone will eventually just accept that toning may or may not be naturally occuring over time. >>

I agree Russ has a point but the fact is your above scenerio has already happened since there are AT coins is holders. Price premiums have obviously not dropped however...

And may have been doing so all along. We can't know on the private ones in the past. But if the current bids are any indication of what he'll get by being so "good", looks like the market will take care of him.

Well, we know this coin doctor reads the forum. I tried to pick off one of his coins so I could have an example in-hand, and he has me blocked.
