Finally Finished 1969 Topps Deckle Edge Set With Scans

Nothing to get to excited about as it's a low grade raw set ( Technically it's one card short as it's missing the # 22B Joe Foy but the Standard Catalog says it's complete at 33 cards) but it's been something I've been slowly working on since I started buying stuff off of eBay back in 2003.

My goal was to spend as little as possible (I have spent more on the shipping and handling than what the cards cost) but still have a presentable set, and except for needing to upgrade some because of the backs I think they look ok.

So with my needing the Bob Gibson I was able to last week win that card along with #11 Hoyt Wilhelm, #12 Rod Carew, #27 Roberto Clemente, #13 Willie McCovey and #32 Juan Marichal for the total of $2.25 + $2.00 shipping. All were upgrades except for the McCovey as it has what looks like pepper pushed into the card front.

So with that said here are front and back scans of what has been a little labor of love.

    Why would someone write the numbers on the back of the card, right above the numbers on the back of the card?!

    Those look really nice in that frame.

    And as far as why someone would write the numbers on the backs I really have no idea. And not only did they write the numbers in ink they also did it in pencil on the same cards (Which I erasedimage )

    A side note on this set. In 1968 Topps produced a test sheet prototype of these cards. There are 9 cards on the sheets, which are also black and white, but undeckled. Tthe fascimile autographs on the sheets can be found in red, blue or black. Yastremski is the only big name that appears on the proof sheet, which has several players that never made the 69 set. The sheets are not common, but can be found on ebay from time to time. Sometimes individual hand cut cards appear also.

    I have a complete set, with lots of duplicates. I screened them, front and back, and sent in the very best ones for grading. I was stunned at the results; I received very few eights, and several fives. I submitted two cards of Yaz, I received one 8 and one 5, and I can not tell the cards apart. I have an outstanding track record in predicting the grades of regular issue cards, but I am terrible with Post Cereal and the deckle edge cards.

    The proof sheet is a neat item, and the OPC versions look the same but have black autographs and blank backs...much harder to find. Scott
