2006 W Plats drying up on Ebay

I show only 4 $100 Plats, 2 70's and two 69's, all PCGS. 7 $10, 3 $25, 5 $50, and 7 sets.

At one time there were 20+ of each.

I was hoping to see them dry up and take off on the ms70 1 oz. But it's seems stagnant.

This is coming from someone in need of cash, and a ms70 to sell of course. LOL

Try to hold out a few more months, I think the market should get stronger for the Plats for the following reasons.

    1) As stated in this thread the number of coins on ebay seems to be decreasing, also the 1oz BIN seem to have (at least for now) gone back up to around $2500.

    2) Coin World's - Coin Values Magazine- is scheduled to run a feature article on Plats in the next issue.

    3) The 10th Anniversery Plats should cause some excitement.

    4) The Second coin in the Legistlative series is coming out later this year.

I think these are good coins to hold for now. I don't plan on selling in the near term.

    That didn't last long!!!
    What? A few hours? image

These are going to take forever to go up in value
due to the high turnover ratio. There goes my
education funds needed NOW for my career! I need to
dump mine too and spoil everyone else's BIN auctions.
There will be about 50 new plats on screwbay now.
Might as well follow the Clackamas tradition.

  • 6 $100 now, there were nearly 30 at the height. Blame Wondercoin, he listed one of the new ones. Both the new Listing are BIN at higher levels.

I suspect much of the early volume was related to people who needed to pay off the debt incurred to buy the coins. I think most of the people are now in the buy and hold, waiting to see how high they go before selling. I predict 2800 by June for a one ounce 69.

This is part of the process. The weak hands and dealers must sell off first. The overhang of inventory as small as it is will not last long. Most of us have junk that we know isn't going anywhere.....identify the dead wood in your collection and dump it for cash to help you with your serious moderns retention.

I know of quite a few dealers that have been classics only that are looking hard at moderns now and they plan to start buying low mintage issues from the mint going forward so as not to left at the gate anymore. This will make it harder for new MEGA coins to be produced. If the back dates like the 2006-w silver, gold and plats, 2004 & 2005 proof plats, 1999 w MS gold etc end up in the bottom of a profound mintage V the results will be obvious.

Guys we are so blessed to be collecting coins RIGHT NOW!

Eric is extremely astute, guys. Look backwards, as well as forward. The market is still formative.

And Bear - don't let go.

I've looked on ebay the last two days, It looks like the number of 2006w Plats is still decreasing. It also looks like the 2,500 and under BIN $100 plats are gone for the moment. Maybe the mint cancellations took some uncertainty out of the market.

Strange, I received an E-Mail from the Mint

that my Plat ,MS Set would ship 3/13/07. That

would be nice, if it actually happens.

I am not quite as excited about prospects as many though am glad I got the 4 coin set, and maybe (?!?) will still get an extra 1 oz. though proof is in the pudding. Still, I am a collector who wishes the set to do well and not an investor directly & try to keep yearly sets going of the unc. plats.

All, or very nearly all, will be kept in original mint or TPG packaging and therefore will be either MS 69 or 70 coins with essentially 100% survival. That still is a fair number of coins. I think of Coin Vault with them hollering how these burnished die "W" issues have lower effective mintages once the set numbers are subtracted than the 4 dollar gold stellas.

While I really like plats and am slowly collecting some of the the proof versions(love the different reverses), your point high condition and high survival skew the reality of how rare"modern coins are vs 100+ yr old type coins with much higher actual mintages, but much, much lower survival in higher grade conditions. 300 years from now all of the moderns will still be a very high condition because of this I still think if you want rare, you have to do it with older coins(errors and certain varieties excluded) that are not hermetically sealed from the get go.

Of course, actual low mintage numbers might be be enough to offset almost 100% high grade survival rate, maybe if someone had a grey sheet from 2057 we would have an idea. I really don't know
