How difficult is it to cherrypick 1979 and 1981 Type 2 proof sets?

In looking at prices on SBA 69DCAM's for these two years, if you're able to pick one of these years for no premium, you could do pretty well.

Certainly Russ, Don, and Marty do very well cherrying through older proof CAMs and DCAMs, but it seems impossible from most of the photos on ebay to determine whether the set is Ty 1 or Ty 2.

Is there any differtiation in the packaging or anything else that indicates what Type these sets are? I would guess most dealers understand the value difference, but there are a lot of people out there that just throw old proof sets up and don't realize the value, or there'd be no way to cherrypick, say, AH Kennedy halves.

Anybody have any experiences in this area?

It's the type of cherrypick that can really only be done in hand at shops and shows.

Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but figured there's no harm in asking.

Mixed sets are easy. Solid type II sets of both dates are much more difficult.

    I agree with Russ 100%!!!

Same can be said for the rarer Ike varieties. Trying to pick up rare varieties on eBay is like skeet shooting
in the dark. You might have some kind of idea which way they clay pigeon is going, but your odds of hitting
it are pretty dang slim. If you go to coin shops and look at the stuff "in hand"...EVERY shot is a HIT!

I travel all over the state when I get days off and set up coin shop "runs"...where I can hit 6-8 in a day
and do 100 times better than I ever do on eBay. If I didn't have to work full-time at my regular job, I would
be MUCH better off right now!image

David, when Mike still owned the shop, he priced the sets based on the dollars, but ignored the other coins. They were too expensive to speculate. Ebayers frequently miss the 81 type II's, as they are more difficult to spot. Good luck!

    A little hint........

81 Type 2 sets went out late in the year...... I think in Nov & Dec.............

Im not saying that Type 1's didn't go out during that timeframe also, but the Type 2's went out along with the Type 1's in Nov / Dec.

When buying unopened boxes of 81's, check the postmark....... If it's NOT Nov/Dec, all you're gonna find is Type 1's inside image

If the postmark is Nov / Dec, there's no guarantee of the sets being Type 2's, but at least you have a chance !!!!
