........and i say sakakawea. that's correct people, according to an article in the coin world, we may see a few changes to the "sacs" or take your choice "saks" in the near future.

the mint may start new commemorative reverses on the dollars and incorporate edge lettering as well. if you have the chance check out the article in the march 5th edition front page.

Yeah, I saw that too in the legislation for the new Sakakawea Dollar Series!! As if we need anymore coins. Here is that wonderful legislation: Legislation (PDF)
It is supposed to start in 2009 if it becomes law. It does not sound like a bad program but maybe they could wait a while or came up with the idea before the Presidential Dollars.

I don't think we should have two $1 coin programs running at once. That would be redundant, and repeatative. Should not have both at once.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!

I don't think we should have three $1 programs (2 coins and 1 rag/paper) at once. Pick one, junk the other two and move on. Who cares about Sacajawea anyway?

Well, the mint wants to get these thing circulating. If there are just so many then all those people will get tired of them, open up all of those rolls they bought and just start spending them.

Under the law Sakagawea wont even be on the coins anymore. It is meant to commemorate the achievements of other Native Americans. The bill also sounds like they want the symbolized $1 on these coins, which I kind on like because it looks modern and leaves more room for the picture. Some of the designs could include: Jim Thorpe, Code talkers, Creation of the Cherokee written language and the Pueblo Revolt.

Edit: I saw the line that they would consult the arts commision for the obverse so I thought it would be a new design, but under that it does say that a picture of Sacagawea will stay on the coin.
  • It looks like they tried to fix things with the 20% of total mintage thing. 4 presidents and 1 Native American per year in equal quantities.

    This sucks so bad.

    Good lord!

How about we just put out 370 different dollar coins each month from now on!

Might as well make it an even 500.

The nice thing about such a selection is it will force collectors to focus on a certain area instead of getting everything every year.

I don't think that rotating designs on dollar coins is a good idea because that is what starts hoarding, nobody hoarded quarters like they do now before the State Quarter Program. People are going to want to keep as many Washington Dollars as they can before Adams comes out and none will be spent. One solid design with a lot made will make them seem like any other coin.
  • Jim Thorpe was great.

So ... wait, what? They're putting Burt Lancaster on a coin? I mean, he was a pretty good actor and all, but c'mon...

Heck, with fiat currency the sky's the limit!
  • Personally I think it is kinda cool, being native and all. Maybe one of my ancestors will make it on one of the coins, I vote for Sequoia.

    Cheers image
