What do you think of this low grade seated dime?

I need to check with a few people but this was not a new find. I think there are still only 3 known. 2 in good and 1 in AU

Holy crap! A shattered obverse 1839 dime. That is a holy grail of variety collecting. You cherrypicked it?

Very nice! I'd grade it at a solid G6. The cracks are very cool but I think it's a bit more than just cracks. As evident by the clearly shifted plane of the die it looks to be a gigantic retained cud. The crack that goes from rim, through S13 and into Liberty displays the effects of the shifted plane.

That's a great find! It looks like the obverse die permanently failed right after striking the coin. Wow.

Here is the other known low grade example. Imagine that; two 1839 Pie Shaped Shattered Obverse dimes in one post.

I'm aware of at least two other examples. The AU55 Ahwash Plate Coin and one in an east coin collection.

Indeed much rarer than an 1874-CC dime......for a lot less money.

They are both severly defective coins

LOL and LOL
The die cracked and the whole press broke down.
The coin flipped outside and was walked on by horses for many years.
The bum that found it did't feel so lucky either.

traded lots and lots of Roosevelts dimes (tens of thousands)
