Someone please explain Seated Dimes to this eBay seller

1853 Seated Dime from eBay

First, he has confused the With Arrows with the No Arrows variety. He calls it "Extremely Rare" and claims it is "at least a VF-20 or better", and is asking for a minimum bid of $75. See for yourself. Now, don't everybody bid at once! imageimageimage

either the seller doesnt know or is preying on the unsuspecting bidder.
see the `almost mint state` whizzed buffalo nickels the seller is hawking?
just one of many giving ebay sellers a bad name no doubt.

I can see the lettering that says "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME", yes. And I can see the number "1853."

Good luck getting $75 for it when I bought this one for about $45 a little over a year ago:

Do you think he buffed this one up before he listed it?

That's gotta be at least EF by their standards. But at least it appears to be a Small Motto.

    When he says VF-20.

Does he mean the pic is "Very Fuzzy?"

How could I have been so foolish all these years by continuing to believe and use my 1980 edition of PHOTOGRADE as my circulated coin standards guide? image It duped me into believing that even a VG-8 Liberty Seated dime must show 3 letters or two full plus two half letters of the word "Liberty". To add insult to injury, it also had me believing that to reach VF-20 status, all of the letters in the word "Liberty" must be sharp!

If it's not too late, maybe he's also selling an inexpensive, up-to-speed grading book that I can bid on.
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

  • At least he didn't say it was the kind with the arrows on it that the mint made just for use by the Indians.

I've been duped by the grading books as well. If you grade by Photograde or the early ANA grading standards, you will leave money on the table when selling. However if you can buy by those standards, that's money in your pocket. I used to chuckle at the early sketched version of the ANA grading guide that showed a perfect full rim with complete denticles on all grades from Good to XF. In fact, those details did not change. From that respect, you needed a Fine or better coin to make Good standards. Ever see a Good barber half with full denticles or a good bust have with the same and split star points?

This listing is really bad.........terrible grading. Must have been under the influence of a powerful drug.

  • I think he heard the word and changed his listing title and opening bid. Still says excellent condition and VF20 or better
