I'm just curious - when you make an auction purchase, do you count the shipping costs as part of the cost of the coin, or do you consider the shipping separate from the "value" of the coin?

It depends. On cheap stuff, which is mostly what I buy, I factor in the shipping. On those rare occasions when I buy something of value, shipping amount isn't realy a factor.

when I maintain records for purchases, I include the shipping costs as part of the cost for the coin.

I dont figure shipping on my coin purchase budget. I count it seperately.

I agree with you. When I buy a coin, I include ALL costs of aquisition (shipping, insurance, etc) in my record keeping as my "basis" in the coin, and when I sell it, I deduct ALL costs of disposal (listing fee, finanl value fee, paypal fees, etc) from ALL proceeds (including the bid+S&H paid).

In this way, I get a true "apples to apples" comparison of all net costs going in vs all net proceeds coming out for a true gain or loss figure.
