1919-S Buffalo nickel: Moving into rarefied air

You can't judge this coin by common-date Buffalo nickel standards; it is one of the worst-struck coins in the series and must be evaluated on its own terms. Believe it or not, this dude is better struck than most, and the luster is exceptional. It is darned hard to find them this nice. Lange notes that the toning on the 1919-S usually is not attractive, and this coin is an exception in that regard, too. Even with the gouge in the right obverse field, it a coveted example by collectors in my socio-economic strata.image
I have posted this coin before. But it's out of its NGC holder now, and headed to PCGS.

Crap, I missed another one! How do you get these? MAN they are nice!

Beautiful 19-S guy, I don't see why it wouldn't go 64, but that 63/64 price jump might weigh heavy in the graders minds(for job security reasons and internal interest fo course). AND I know it's not supposed to, but I'm saying it MIGHT happen.

The tail is kinda mushy, but other than that, IT's AWESOME!! nice pickup, and I still can't believe you take these pics freehanded!

This is my first YOU STINK!!! hope it doesn't offend you!.........I don't say suck!

  • Ahhh....I remember this one....NGC64??? your original post caused some controversy but brought out some information that goes against the traditional thinking about the 19-S and the 19-D....I will defer anyone that wants the specifics of that info to Mr Pope(Koynekwest)...Good luck with PCGS!

  • Guy,

Anyone who is serious about Buffalos knows that the 19-S, especially the reverse, is one of the toughest to find well-struck. And as you said, for the date, it qualifies. I agree with my fellow posters that it will probably 64. (I like the horn detail on this one!)

    Nice coin.

    Ed,

Start a thread with your submission results. We'd like to see it, but I don't want to take attention away from Guy's beautiful 19-S.
