Please Grade This 1921D Morgan & Advise

This is the best scan I can get of it. There is a toning spot on the cap from when this was in a 2x2 w/broken mylar. I submitted a 1900 with a spot like this and PCGS graded it 65. Question is, aside from the grade, would any of you dip this (I don't dip) for the toning spot? The worst thing I see on this is a hit (somewhat hidden) in the hair above the ear. That's a mark near the jaw, not a scratch. On the reverse, the worst is an extremely shallow hit in the field at 3:00 between wing & wreath. The scanner also fails to show frosty devices, especially the stars, date, lettering. Anyway, dip the spot or leave it (didn't seem to matter on the 1900). I only need this one to go 64 to make it worthwhile. Thanks!

Provided the luster is all there, I think that should easily go 64, with or without the toning spot. Personally, I would just leave it, but I'm not a dipping enthusiast usually...

  • Thanks you guys! Looking at those scans drove me to experimenting with the digital camera and Ott-Lites again and I think I've discovered the macro-lens. Next time, the pics should be better.

Don't take a chance on damaging it; NT leave it alone MS64 PL

Based on the images looks like 64 no problem. Personally, that toning spot is a major distraction - some would say a really quick dip done right would be an improvement.

I'd give it a really fast inandout dip in a 50% solution. Making any part of that spot go away will help the eye appeal.

    MS64 either way, though.
    When in doubt, don't.

If I'm seeing satin fields rather than overdipped washed out flatness, I would say the coin would go MS64 with or without the toned spot. I sure don't see, from this image, the prospect of PL.
Were it me, I would leave the coin as is. BUT, if that spot bothers you, then go ahead an get rid of it.
Place about a coffee cup full of water (I prefer distilled water, but tap is o.k. too) in a cereal bowl and mix a tablespoon or two of baking soda into the water. You could try to set a dip bowl up with half water and half Jewluster or just dip the coin in the jewel luster very quickly and immediately place it in the baking soda water and move it around, while still holding on to the edges, in there for a few seconds and then rinse throughly with running tap water. The baking soda neutralizes the affects of the dip. Shake the excess water off the coin and lightly pat it (turning it over as you do) with either a lint free cloth or paper towel. Allow to sit for an hour or two before placing in a 2 X 2 or other holder.
As I say, I wouldn't dip this coin, but if that spot bothers you, then I would......then again, if it bothers me, I probably wouldn't have bought it in the first place. image

LOOKS 65 TO ME, BUT THE SPOT IS DISTRACTING...I THINK IT WOULD GO 64
