  • Help..I need help with this.
  • Looks like a re-punched S mintmark. I am no expert though. That sure is an odd obverse strike. Very weak in some places and what is goin on with Jeff's neck?

I'm no expert but does that look like a struck thru or die clash?

Something looks funky with that S. It looks like doubling on the S or something like that.
I'd have to have it in hand to tell for sure though...

  • The shot of Jefferson portrait on the '54 is very weak and could be another error as pointed out by mrpaseo. I posted another jeff to compare the two strikes.

Comparing two different shots of Jefferson Obverse. The '54 does look odd like a strike through or a very worn die. Interesting stuff

    It looks like a 54 S/S west RPM #3.

Looks like a normal S mintmark for the time period. I'm not sure if it was die deterioration or damage to the punch itself, but many early 50's S-mint coins look like they have RPMs to the north or west.

I can't find a picture of the S/D OMM, but the D mintnark extends well below the S and the bottom serif is fully formed, even in later die states. If no one updates the thread with a pic I'll try to grab one of my example this evening.

What I think is you wasted your money sending it in.

    Normal "S" IMO.
  • Okay the mintmark looks odd and take a look at the obverse strike. Seems odd compared to a "normal strike"
  • Die erosion my good friend.

Bingo! I do not believe it's an RPM or OMM. It's simple die erosion.

Although the die erosion is much more pronounced on the obverse.

The mintmark is completely normal, as is the strike. The obverse die was very well worn which does change the amount of detail and appearance of the details on the resulting coins. Nothing at all indicates error or die variety on your coin.
