Upgrade possible on this PL morgan?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
Newp. If I'm reading Conder101's page correctly, this is a PCGS 4 series holder (serial number starting to the left of the barcode), making it 1990-1995 vintage.

The frost break (lets call it a beauty mark) that shows up on the cheek in the cameo view almost disappears in the close-up, but the contact mark on the cheek appears a little more in this view.

The reverse is just a super strong strike with no problems but with a similarly smoke & mirrors look.

Thoughts? Solid 64pl? Possible 65pl? Any vams for this year & mm? Any opinions yea or nay?

Judging by the pics I think the coin is in the correct holder. Looks like a pretty clean coin but that is a nasty hit on the cheek.

The vast majority of the OGH coins that would upgrade have been upgraded. I am sure there are still a few upgrade candidates in the green holders just like in any type holder.

Very nice Morgan you have there.

Thanks, guys. It's not a huge jump in price to be a 65, but I've got 65s in PCGS holders that don't hold a candle to it. Guess PCGS is harder on PLs.

The reverse (The tick under the wing at ~9:00 is a piece of dirt):

    I agree looks like a 64 not a 65.

It looks to be in its appropriate holder. Pls and dmpls can fool you on occasion, though, as the marks show up more than a similarly graded non-pl coin. That date doesn't have much of a jump in value to 65pl or 64dmpl, so I would leave it in its ogh (if that's why you were thinking of trying for a regrade).

I think that hack on the cheek limits it to 64.

It's gonna hold 64 and would possibly lose the PL if cracked and submitted. PCGS doesn't care about flash as much as clear mirrors these days. I would call it a prooflike but they might not anymore.

Nice looking coin. I believe it is correctly graded at 64. -Preussen

If it loses its PL designation, then it should definitely go 65. Has to be smoe kind of trade-off.

Here's my non PL 1880-s in MS65 for comparison:

I would say no to the upgrade also. It could just be the pic/lighting but the obv appears a touch softly struck, look at the cotton bolls and some of the lower hair curls. That may be frost/pic issues but baised upon these pics this could just as easly go MS63 if cracked out. Its also harder to judge with really large pics, every imperfection looks monster sized. JMHO

Your 65 is overgraded which is why it remains in an OGH tomb.

What?!! Say it isn't so! They're the same year, same MM, and graded at about the same time! The whole point of TGPs is for standardized grading image

Can smoeone at least gimme an amen on the purchase?

Weiss, it does look like you have two 64s on your hands....although the 65 could be a 65 due to clean cheek and mostly clean fields....but those hits to the right of the nostril look pretty bad in such a big pic!
