Hey, Russ! ANOTHER SAE 20th Annv thread ;) (aka "Results from Presidential Review")

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,789 ✭✭✭✭✭
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I once received grades on some 20th Annv SAE sets (1st Strike).

I received some RP PR70 and PR70DCAM, some MS69 coins, and a handful of MS68/PR68 (reverse proof) as well.
I agreed with 1 of the PR68 coins but not the rest. I compared them to the PR69/70 and MS69 coins I had from the same order.

So, I did what every fool thinking he is right does....I sent them in for Presidential Review. Now, since I am not a submission guru, I didn't know that these really didn't qualify for the PR but they were accepted anyway. Now, 2 months and 3 days after they were received, we get notification they are done and grades show.

Hmmmmm.....I am scared....but I want to see them.....so, here goes...let's see how bad 1st quarter's tuition really was.....

Line # Item # PCGS No. CoinDate Denomination Variety Grade
1 1 899977 2006-P $1 Eagle-20th Anniv. Reverse Proof PR68
2 1 899977 2006-P $1 Eagle-20th Anniv. Reverse Proof PR68
3 1 899977 2006-P $1 Eagle-20th Anniv. Reverse Proof PR68
4 1 89991 2006-W $1 Eagle-20th Anniversary MS69
5 1 89991 2006-W $1 Eagle-20th Anniversary MS69

So, the uncs went up (they damn well should have...they looked virtually perfect if I recall....getting MS68 was a travesty) but the reverse proofs stayed the same.
I hope they didn't SPOT in the 2 months they sat there as they were super clean on the way in.......I just have to figure out what to do with them now.....remake the sets and keep them raw (I have some ideas of neat gift ideas)? Leave in their holders?

They also should have remained in their 1st strike holders....what are the odds though? I may have to call PCGS tomorrow and verify and hope I beat them before they are sent back.....

It is on the main PCGS.COM site....basically, you get grades back, and within a short time period, send them back in, pay $20/coin "tuition", and David Hall looks at them and writes a small note if they don't upgrade (ie...if he agrees with the grade on the label). From what people have said, it is normally a losing situation as grades don't seem to change much.

I am interested in seeing his notes as to why the PR68 reverse proofs didn't go to PR69 as they were all of that. So, I paid $20/coin (plus shipping each way) to get 2 upgrades, 3 stay the same, and 3 notes from David.

From what I understand a few of the reverse proofs have a bit of fade in the (reverse) mirrors (in the thickest part of the obverse skirt lines) that warrant a grade less than PR69. NGC doesn't catch this or if they do, don't care, but PCGS will frag an otherwise worthy coin for it.

Also look for planchet "sparkles" (for a lack of a better term). Too many will kill the grade too.
(To check, take the coin outside in the bright noon day sun and slowly rotate it. Those little blinding star sparkles are ever so slight planchet 'defects'. They're easier to spot on gold but with a eye trained to see them are also seen on the silver without too much difficulty.)

    Thanks Pat.
I know the "sparkles" portion well. And, PCGS actually does grade some PR69 with them (very noticeable "sparkles" too...nothing you need to really hunt for).

Didn't know or see the "fade" portion...been over 2 months since I have seen these so I will look. Doesn't really show in the pics image
