Darkside "wonder coins": who has the highest grades?

I've really enjoyed the scans that have been posted here lately, many of the coins are in amazing states of preservation for their age; so that got me thinking.........

I think it would be fun for the forum to post their highest graded coin (either PF or MS) per coin material (i.e. copper, silver, gold, steel, etc.). Country of origin doesn't really matter, I think it would be fun for everyone to see a nice array of old darkside coins in high grades.

I guess I can start........my fledgling collection doesn't have any true "wonder coins" yet, but i'm working on it. Here are my highest darkside grades to date........

silver: NGC MS64 French 5 Francs, 1873

Gold: PCGS MS66 Dutch 10 guilders, 1875

Austrian taler; Hall mint; NGC MS-66 (DAV-3338B). If the truth be told, probably a hair overgraded, but I will not argue.

I'm always amazed that a coin hundreds of years old can be mint state much less a gem quality, like this one.
374 years old ....... and like the day it was minted. WOW

Thanks for the compliments! The history of the coin has intrigued me. Was it carefully maintained by consecutive generations of coin collectors? Perhaps hidden in a piece of furniture? Passed along as a family heirloom? Did a coin collector perhaps lock it away as a special piece many decades ago? It is fun to think of the possibilties.

The collection of the various tokens used in lieu of scarce official coinage was all the rage in Britain late in the 18th century.
Some were even made just to exploit the interest of those collectors (Any similarity to the present day is purely coincidental! image)

Many of these tokens have gone from collection to collection over the years and thus are often available in mint state
    (but usually not MS66.)

I agree, nice coins one and all (is this not a fantastic hobby)? WWW, I'm particularly partial to the Canadians - what a pair of 1967 wolves! Super toning!

I'm sure that this is not a pop-top, but it ain't bad. The obverse is white, the reverse is magnificent (IMHO).

I've got several classic pieces in MS66 and even MS67. My highest graded business strike (and it's fairly modern at that) is a Danish 10 Kroner from 1968, ANACS MS68.

I "made" an MS68 on a Soviet silver 10-rouble olympic coin, once, I believe. From ANACS. The coin was wildly toned with some amazing colors.

I probably have a few pieces in the MS/PR 67-69 range right now, but nothing in TPG plastic.

Two of my most recent purchases are actually my current highest-graded world coins.

Both were bought for resale, so if anybody's interested, lemme know... imageimage (I paid fifty bucks for each of them, and would take... uhh... ???)

Wow, a PCGS MS67 RD PEI cent is definitely a wonder coin. I have seen two others. I take it they all came from some hoard? What is the pop on those? Yours looks golder than the others I have seen.

You are truly a monster of the Greyside. Love those supergrade Greyside Vickies. Wow!

The PEI comes from the Heaton hoard. There are maybe 10 or 12 in 67, but they sure are nice.

My one and only "Darkside" example. This one isn't even in the NGC Census:

In 1913 Karl Goetz designed his first patterns. He made two sets, one depicting Emperor Wilhelm II, on its obverse side, and the other set showing King Ludwig of Bavaria, also on the obverse side. The reverses for both sets are identical. The pattern sets were made in pure silver and number only six sets of each (I own one of the Bavarian sets). Goetz was not allowed to sell any 'after strikes" in rare metals according to law so he struck up five coin sets in values of 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 Mark pieces. The metals used were either brass, bronze, bronze-copper, or copper. Any of these metals, with the exception of the brass, can also be found in silver gilt (versilbert) or gold gilded (vergoldet) examples. The bronze and copper examples are the most prevalent. None of these patterns (K-76,K-77) were accepted as designs for regular currencies. In the case of these Emperor Wilhelm II and King Ludwig patterns, the outbreak of World War I and its outcome determined the fate of these pieces. They were discarded when the rulers were deposed. There are examples made from gold and platinum too but these were probably struck after it was known that the patterns would not become official German coinage. Goetz made many more pattern designs but none were ever accepted as coinage. Thanks cacheman for this info! Photo credits to mgoodm3!
