<< <i>Thanks ... I find it amazing that most of the coins in this series have total pops in the twenties for all grades. How could someone actually put together an entire set? >>
Patience, patience and even more patience. And being in the right place at the right time....

That tell you anything? BTW, if you think that coin is "original", you need to look up the numismatic definition of the word.

Either you are getting really good deals, the market is getting weak, or you are willing to pay too much. I'd bet #1 or #2.

It's a shame the thing was tortured that way. The coin looks new to me.
<< <i>Cleaned. Dipped. Poorly rinsed. Retoning fugly. But it's a low pop. and thASS all that matters, right? >>
I'll second this, it appears to be one of those coins that was dipped before submitting, then turned in the hold due to improper neutralizing of the acid.
You got burnt, unless you're really just collecting labels.

Then quit being a dickhead ... we don't care if you are Boy Wonder to Russ' Batman
I never claim my coins are "original" in the general case because I don't know. However, I usually try for coins that look more original, though I will buy a lightly dipped coin on occasion if it's otherwise "all there." Here's the Seated Quarter I bought a couple months ago for the 1877 type set I'm starting to dabble in. It looks like an original coin could look, and if it's been messed with, that's the doctor I want performing my brain surgery if I ever need it. This one is PCGS 63.

You should thank us. We could blow smoke up your ass, and tell you what a great purchase you made. Instead, we're giving you the facts. Maybe, if that happens enough, you'll stop getting bent over buying coins about which you know nothing. Consider it a public service.

We all know your intent here. Things have been civil for a while ... why not just let that continue instead resuming your petty attacks. I could give a $4it and I'll return your fire all day long, but it seems like the rest of the board likes it better when you are not incessantly poking at people until they respond.
...and since when is an honest opinion a "petty attack"? Since you aquired too much discretionary income and no education?

It is not an honest observation nor is it truth. It is another one of your petty attacks intended to draw a wiley response ... and you have now received the attention that you are so desparately trying to get. Now, go bother someone else little boy

I have got to step in here.
First, I am Boy Wonder™.
Second, in the past I have similarly purchased low pop seated branch mint coinage on an impulse (an 1862-S dime in a PCGS XF-45 holder), only to later realize that there are a lot more of these raw than I would have ever imagined. Check out Dick Osburn's inventory, and you will see what I mean.
Third, I cannot affirm or deny the coin originality, but there is a funky line that goes from 1 o'clock to 9 o'clock that separates a darker, mottled area from a lighter area that would certainly give me pause.

Fletcher,
I do not know CoinDeuce enough to say.
When I say post wrong or stupid, BatMan comes at me with the same smart aleck responses as he does you. I have learned over time while the truth often hurts, he is rarely, if ever, wrong.

You totally discounted my take on the coin.
I don't know you from Adam, you signed up here after I stopped doing much posting. That coin has all the classic traits of a coin that was dipped and turned in the holder.

Nothing that a few bozos say or do on this forum hurts in the least ... just out of curiousty, why did you just revive that year-old thread that attempted to make me look bad because Laura sells me high end DMPLs Louis? Was it simply to be a dick or was there a more enlightened reason?

That thread quite clearly demonstrates your integrity in dealing with other numismatists. It's quite revealing.

<< <i>That thread quite clearly demonstrates your integrity in dealing with other numismatists. It's quite revealing. >>
Enlighten us all ... how does that thread demonstrate my numismatic integrity? Did I cheat someone in that thread? Did I dip or AT a coin in that thread? Did I take payment on a coin book and not deliver in that thread? Did I rip off an old lady at my coin shop in that thread?

Buying top quality Seated Dimes in Gem BU and Proof.
Buying great coins - monster eye appeal only.
<< <i>I'll step in w/my 2 cents-I can't quite tell how the coin is via an image-however, that date and grade certainly are an INTELLIGENT purchase. >>
So, Laura, if this was such a smart purchase, why didn't you step up and buy it?

<< <i>I appreciate the strike and preservation of details on this coin, I am just not a fan of its surfaces. >>
Since I do not clean coins this is outside of my expertise, but might the surfaces improve if cracked out, dipped, and rinsed properly. The surfaces will never be original, but my question is might the surfaces at least be improved, if done properly? And if so, wouldn't the strike and detail be easier to appreciate.
<< <i>I appreciate the strike and preservation of details on this coin, I am just not a fan of its surfaces. >>
Testify brother!
Since there is obviously some controversy about your ability to 'see' and grade a coin for what it 'might' actually be, please enlighten us as to your qualifications to recognize and determine a coins condition. ie: original as compared to 'messed' with.... etc ....
I think explaining your Numismatic knowledge, and how it was gained, would go a long way in quieting the naysayers.
Thanks

Isn't this getting a bit ridiculous? Do we really need people to post references every time they share a new purchase?
Fletcher, what matters is that PCGS liked the coin and presumably you like the coin too. If you're not prepared to hear dissenting opinions on the coin, you probably shouldn't post it in the first place. That said, it would be refreshing of some of those "naysayers" could separate their opinion of the coin from their opinion of the OP. All this "fool and his money" stuff is doing nothing to advance anyone's understanding of the merits or demerits of the coin.
There, I hope I didn't dent the soapbox.
