Got the shaft on Ebay **Update 3/5**
Just got the word from Ebay that a seller that I bought 2 rolls of 2006 ASE is "No longer a registered user". I have not received the rolls, but I sent the check. They did request a MO or Bank Check. I mistakenly sent a personal check. I called the bank this morning and the check has not come in so I put a stop payment on it.
This time I was lucky.
Here is the link to their feedback. I thought a new user just getting started. 18 on feedback, sure give it a shot. I will be more careful in the future.

<< <i>Could be, but just because they were NARU'd doesn't mean they won't deliver. There are plenty of reasons to be NARU'd other than being a scammer. >>
Certainly true, but it's not a very good sign to get NARU'd with a join date of Jan/07 Good job on stopping that check in time.

Oh, I certainly agree, and I would have stopped payment, too. Just because I wouldn't assume they must be a scammer doesn't mean I'm going to take unnecessary risks.

Sometimes people open accounts just to sell a few items that they have, and then they close them once the items are sold. This happened to me once. I did receive the coins though.

<< <i>thats what you get for dealing with the NASCAR crowd!
Hey. My 6 yr old son is a big NASCAR fan. Fell in love with the numbers when he was 3. Has a 48 Jacket he wears to school every day....
<< <i>Can't close an eBay account if you've had any activity within 90 days. Have to wait 90 days and can't buy or sell during that time. >>
hmmm? All I know is that right after the auction ended his account went to no longer a registered user. I assumed he closed it. Maybe Ebay suspended it. I did get the coin though.

"....eBay has decided to discontinue the eBay Standard Purchase Protection
Program in the U.S. and Canada. We found that many members were
dissatisfied with the program because of the time it took to process
claims and the $25 processing fee.
This program covered most eBay transactions up to $200 when an item was
not received or significantly not as described (minus a $25 processing
fee). When the program began in 1999, it provided some purchase
protection for paper transactions, such as personal checks, money
orders, and cashier's checks. Today, fewer members use these payment
methods, and the time and costs associated with verifying these
transactions has led to a poor experience for some eBay buyers.
Additionally, these types of payment methods can be risky for both
buyers and sellers. Payments made by personal checks, money orders, and
cashier's checks are difficult to recover in cases of fraud.
To improve buyer protection, we're expanding coverage on items purchased
with PayPal on eBay in the U.S. and Canada.
In the U.S., PayPal will offer $200 of protection on all items purchased
with PayPal (excluding Live Auctions and vehicles). In Canada, all
eligible PayPal transactions will be covered up to $315 CA. Sellers
offer PayPal on over 95% of listings in the U.S., so buyers will be
protected on most listings. There is no processing fee, no minimum
purchase price, and no seller requirements.
Additionally, PayPal Buyer Protection will be increased to cover up to
$2,000 for items listed by qualified sellers in the U.S. and Canada.
This change doubles the current $1,000 coverage.
These changes to the protection we offer buyers are important to the
future health of the eBay marketplace and the growth of our sellers'
businesses. "
In short, I think what ebay is trying to say is this "if you pay any ebay item with personal checks, money
orders, and cashier's checks, you are out of luck because there will be no protection for you." So you better use paypal and I find that if you use your credit card to pay Paypal and file a charge back when you have problems with any dealers, you are doubly protected. Also, if the dealer doesn't purchase electronic delivery confirmation even though they may have a signed receipt, there is not sufficient for Paypal to prove they deliver the item. I was lucky that I always bidded only on items listed by ebay dealers with high rating and so far when I returned an item I always received 100% of my purchase price (including shipping) even though the dealer said shipping charge would be non-refundable. In one case, one honest dealer even refunded my returning postage.
Therefore, while there are some good ebay dealers out there abosolutely refuse to take Paypal, I believe for your protection, do not bid on those items unless you know that dealer well. I notice in general the ebay items that do not accept Paypal generally attract less bids and lower prices.
I will never send cash to any ebay dealers outside U.S. There is absolutely no way you can prove you send them the money and there are no laws to protect you from recovering your money. I do not believe ebay has done enough to proectect their bidders. I believe all ebay dealers should post a "cash bond" with ebay before they are allowed to sell anything on ebay.
What are your opinions?
<< <i>It seems ebay no longer provides buyer protection to many items listed on ebay. When I asked them why and this is their reply:

In other words.....We're not getting our extra 3% when you do not use paypal so we are going to strong arm buyers and sellers to use paypal.
<< <i>Was this the guy selling $9.00 ASEs with $1.00 shipping? >>
I don't think it is, as he's still listed on eBay, and in fact has a MS70 Plat for sale too. I immediately thought the same thing you did.

EXACTLY.
have you tried to contact this weasal>?
EBAY's reply, "for privacy reasons, they couldn't disclose anything about the seller" but stated their Buyer Protection policy was a recourse I could use. I figured, $20 to stop the check or lose $25 with EBAY, I let it ride.
Well seller beat me, never responded to my emails, and now after about 30 days, I got a notice from EBAY this week that my claim has been satisfied, but I lost $50, since I bot 2 items, and here's the kicker, I can expect payment within the next 45 days. I guess I just got in under the Protection policy.
I think EBAY should notify all BUYERS who won an auction within a 7 day window that the seller was NARU'ed and provide a very simple explanation: such as voluntary cancellation vs. EBAY suspension, esp if it effects a users credentials, i.e. false addrss, false bank account etc. I wouldn't care if NARU'ed for shill bidding or seller was pulling items off EBAY and selling to Buyers outside EBAY.
Hopefully your seller is not an honest businessman & gets burnt for the stopped check, but you did the smart thing.
I called the seller and he assures me that the sale will go through; then I went to the local branch at the bank and reversed the stop payment. No charges will be applied to my account. The seller is also local, about 60 miles away and owns a shop that deals in sports cards and some bullion type coins.
Also, he states that he has no idea why his account was denied at Ebay and he is looking into it. I guess I will trust. If nothing else I can take him to small claims court. It will be easier since he is local.
Am I being too trusting?

MMMMMMMMMMM. The rolls were shipped that afternoon from a post office 16 miles from my home town. I got the two rolls of silver eagles.
He must have been closer than I thought.
It is all resolved. Thank goodness...or I was out $600

<< <i>The check cleared the bank on the day I tried to stop payment and I reversed it; 2/8/07. I called him and he assured me that the rolls would be shipped on 2/12. The rolls did not arrive in 5 days so I tried to call and left a message on his cell phone. On the following Tuesday, 2/20, I left another message and sent an email thorugh Ebay. Friday still no coins so I called and left a message on Ebay. Monday 2/26 I called again and left another message on Ebay and opened a dispute. Wednesday 2/28, another call and this time on the Ebay dispute I wrote that I would take this to small claims court and I have all the paper work from Ebay and the canceled check with his bank account number and being in the area I am sure to win this case.
