Part Four: FUN Submissions: Grades Posted .

Part One:

I received the first group of grades for my 1889 Mint & Proof Sets

Denomination; NGC Prev. Grade; New PCGS Grade; Comment.

$.01; MS64RB; MS64RB; Solid coin for the grade.
$.03; MS66; MS65; image
$.05; MS64; MS63; image
$.05; PR65; PR65; image
$.10; MS62; Altered Surfaces; image
$.10; PR64; PR63CAM; image
$.25; PR66CAM; PR64CAM; image
$.50; MS65; MS64; image
S$1.00; MS65; MS64; image
$2.50; AU58; Altered Surfaces;image
$5.00; AU58; AU58; image
P-$20.00; AU55; AU55;image
S-$20.00; AU58; AU58; image

The only two cross overs that upset me are the quarter
[which looked every bit the PR 66 CAM that it is, is coming back as a PR 64 CAM ]
and the half dollar [ again, the coin - image below - was from the Jim Gray collection
and was as solid a MS 65 as I could image it - unless the toning hid something I and NGC
did not notice ]

image

Sorry, I don't have an image of the quarter.

Edited:

Only the grades were posted; the coins were submitted in their original NGC holders; I was afraid to crack them out for fear of damaging the coins !! I won't receive the coins for a few days; I assume the two coins that did not cross will be returned in their original NGC holders.

I have to agree with the post below, I thought this was a disaster as well.

Re-edited: I made one error in posting; the MS nickel which was an NGC 64 came back as a 63, not a 65.

No immediate plans on selling these sets; just wanted everything in the same holder.

Patience, Casey; there's a few Barbers coming.

Also regrades and Pedigree Designation for eight SLQ's.

it is unusual for PCGS to BB coins that NGC did not. Usually NGC is the trigger-happy company on body bags

Tough hit on the .25 and .50 cent pieces, nice upgrade on the .05. PCGS is so tough on NGC coins......I'm in no hurry to crossover my NGC coins to PCGS.

Mike, I got 3 "altered surfaces" on my last 10 coin submission, it wouldn't bother me if I could tell why--------------BigE

Well, you must have selected "cross at any grade". Something I'm not sure I would do. Actually you did pretty well IMO. If you sent in 20 NGC MS 67 Washington Quarters... you'd be very lucky to have 1 cross at MS67. I'm not sure why they are so harsh on some...

Yes, I submitted "Cross at Any Grade"...

When will I ever learn ?

I'm still awaiting the results on the Barber material
    and the SLQ Re-Grades.

Also a couple of errors are in for cross over
NGC 61 coin will come back...let me guess: AU 58:

The other error coin - a 1901-P Barber Dime - 15% O/C - was submitted in an ANACS AU53 holder.
Sorry no image on file. Eventually, all my raw Barber dimes will be holdered at PCGS, and although
there was nothing wrong with keeping these error coins in their original holders, I just wanted
my collection in just one type of holder. [ I fully understand that these error coins can't be placed
in my Registry sets and that was not my intent to do so.]

    Part Two: SLQ Regrades

All eight coins I resubmitted for regrades are being returned in their
original grades. I'm a bit more than disappointed that my 1928-D
MS 66 FH didn't upgrade, as its the finest one I have ever seen.

PCGS also saw fit not to give these coins my Pedigree Designation
as the set is no longer 100% complete. [ I always thought that if
the set were 90% compelte, they would Pedigree the set, provided
it was in the top five in its respective category.] Now, only 75% of my coins
have my name on their holders.

This looks like it was another excercise in futility. Anyway, here are
the dates of the coins I submitted along with their grades:

1920-P MS65FH [ EX: NGC 66FH - second resubmission - thought they'd bump the coin in their own holder].
1920-D MS65FH [ Wishful thinking on my part]
    1927-P MS66FH [ Thought it might 67 FH ]
    1928-D MS66FH [ As mentioned above ]
1929-P MS66FH [ Looks like it could have been in a 67 FH holder...very close]
    1929-P MS65FH [ Looks nicer than any 65FH I have ever seen; should be a 66FH ]
    1929-D MS64FH [ Wishful thinking, again]
1930-S MS66FH [ More wishful thinking on my part]

Part three to follow: Barber Cross Overs.

Actually if you take away the NGC DNC ones you did pretty good on this one. I would have been pretty happy just to have them all in the same slab. I tried to cross a dozen or so NGC slabbed Indian Half Eagles and about half crossed and the other half got lowered by 1 or 2 grades. Mostly I agreed. I have submitted a few old ANACs slabs for crossover and had all but 2 cross at the same grade and the other 2 got bumped up.

I've always wondered if anyone has ever done an experiment on crossing back and forth between PCGS and NGC about 10 times and see where you started and where you end up. Does the TPG continually lower the grade to be tighter than its predecessor (spelling?), which would take an unc coin down to about xf40 (haha)? Anyone here with any experience, it is a bit time and money consuming, so it might not have been done on purpose.

    Mike,

You're submissions reinforce my opinion that PCGS is overly tough on crossing NGC graded coins into their holders. Probably has something to do with NGC being their biggest competitor, vs. ANACS, PCI, ICG, etc., and trying to exude an air of "tougher grading standards" over NGC. From what I've seen on these boards, this dilemma is most apparent when it comes to crossing Barber coins. I just can't believe that there can be that much of a difference in the two grading companies standards. On another note, if and when, I ever cross my NGC and ANACS graded Barber halves to PCGS, I'm going to feel alot more confident in my ANACS holdered coins crossing than my NGC coins.

My relatively small world of experience with crossing circulated, midgrade Barber halves is that:

crossing NGC in the slab will usually get a downgrade, and it is often justified, but not always. I have had ONE that crossed at the same grade.

crossing ANACS in the older slab will usually stay the same or go up. I have had only ONE that went down from 30--> 25 (justified imo).

I think the new ANACS slabs often house some very tightly graded coins and are a nice source for getting undergraded coins, if you are confident with your grading skills. I would not send any coins to ANACS for grading these days unless using as a bridge to go to PCGS.

To my surprise, both PCGS and NGC seem to FAVOR 'shiny' or lightly toned coins-- and especially ones that have had a light cleaning/ scrub job with those patterned hairlines just blasting back at you under 5 x.!! They will punish a darker toned coin in a heartbeat. NGC likes them scrubbed a little, too and ANACS doesn't seem to mind either, on common dates.

I have felt ,like Dan F., that trying to cross NGC coins in the plastic over to PCGS arouses some sort of 'competeitive ire' on the part of PCGS graders and they're trying to punish or teach 'em a lesson, but maybe I'm just projecting.

All that being said, not surprised at your results, Mike. Thanks for sharing with us.

Like the others sorry to hear about the 1901-s altered surfaces. I've sent in a 93-s around vf30 twice and got it bodybagged twice for altered surfaces. After learning my lesson, I sent it in again last week for a third time and I'll let you know when I get the bodybag back again.image

Those are some serious coins. I own very few slabbed Barber pieces, but have noticed from looking at coins offered on the floor that PCGS, NGC and ANACS all allow circulated coinage into their slabs as problem-free even after what appears, in my opinion at least, to be an unacceptable level of cleaning or alteration. Of course, that is hardly a scientific observation. I have also noticed that deeply toned pieces that appear original are more likely to be accurately or undergraded when compared to the previously noted pieces.

The fourth and last submission's grades have FINALLY been posted:

1889 IHC Double Struck - Previously in an NGC MS 61 holder [ previously imaged]
    ...................................... - Now in a PCGS AU 55 holder.
    Doesn't surprise me too much...alot of 61's are 55's and 55's are 61's.

1901 Barber Dime - 10% Off Center - Previously in an ANACS AU 53 holder [ sorry, no images]
    ......................................................... - Now in a PCGS AU 55 holder.
I always thought this should have been in an AU 58 holder.

Overall, the feedback I've received has been favorable as to the assigned grades.
However, I have been a bit disappointed in receiving lower than expected grades
for the 1889 Half [EX: NGC 65 - EX: Jim Gray collection] Now PCGS 64.
The 1889 quarter [EX: NGC 66 CAM] Now PCGS 64 CAM.
    The 1901-P Half [ EX: NGC 65 Star ] Now PCGS 64.

The biggest disappointment has been the "Altered Surfaces" / DNC I received on
    the 1901-S NGC 63.

No more belly-aching here. I've taken it on the chin [ more paper losses than I care
to think about] but all of these submissions have taught me a lesson or two...

" ...buy the coin, not the holder... "....."...however, make sure the coin's in a PCGS holder !! "
