will us little guys be able to buy 2007 ms/pf buffalo $5/$10/$25/$50 coins from the mint,instead of a dealer.if so,when do they go on sale?and does the mint have to stop selling them on june 22 2007,because congress signed it for only 1 year.thanks for the information

Ahhhh....... Thanks a bunch. I was wondering jsut how many were out there and from which countries. In reality, it doesn't need to be 24 KT gold. Any 1/10 ounce, "official" gold coin would look nice in my type set.

There is one way they will be low mintage and that is if they get a late start like say November and then the next year the 2008 starts in say April. Then we have a winner.

A public meeting of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee was held on November 14, 2006.
The CCAC reviewed proposed designs for the 2008 issues of the Presidential Dollar Coin Program. The committee’s recommended designs are:
James Monroe: JM-03
John Quincy Adams: JQA-01
Andrew Jackson: AJ-09
Martin Van Buren: MVB-10
The CCAC also recommends the proposed Indian/Buffalo theme and designs for the 2007 fractional issues of the Mint’s 24-Karat gold proof coin program in addition to the 24-Karat gold uncirculated coin program in all sizes.
The CCAC voted unanimously to report that its second choice for the 2008 American Eagle Platinum Proof bullion coins, representing the Judicial branch of government, had been design J-6. Further, the CCAC had recommended that whichever design was chosen, the figure of Justice should be blindfolded.

1. Chairman Mitch Sanders called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.
2. The committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes of the CCAC’s September 28, 2006 meeting.
3. Kaarina Budow of the United States Mint presented proposed designs for the 2008 issues of the Presidential dollar coin series. The 2008 dollar coins will honor James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson.
4. Ms Budow indicated that the designs under consideration employed a standard obverse template, which will be used throughout the series beginning in 2007.
5. Members of the CCAC rated each proposed design using a scale from 0 points to 3 points, with higher numbers indicating more favorable ratings. The total of the individual rankings is used as the basis for the committee’s design recommendations.
6. With nine members present and voting, the maximum possible rating was 27 points. The committee’s ratings of the proposed designs were as follows.

7. For the coin featuring James Monroe, the CCAC’s recommendation is JM-03, which received 19 of a possible 27 points. A similar design, JM-10, is the committee’s 2nd choice.
8. For the John Quincy Adams coin, the CCAC’s clear preference is for JQA-01.
9. None of the designs for the Andrew Jackson coin received a strong endorsement from the committee. AJ-09, based on an image also featured on a $20 bill from the 20th century, received 14 points and is the CCAC’s recommendation. AJ-07, with 12 points, is the committee’s second choice.
10. For the Martin Van Buren issue, the CCAC’s recommendation is MVB-10, with 19 points. The CCAC’s second choice, with 16 points, is the similar MVB-08.
11. Regarding the coin’s reverse, Ms Budow indicated that the image of the Statue of Liberty used on the 2007 coins would be continued in 2008. Ms Budow, along with Greg Weinman of the United States Mint, indicated that the Mint is leaving the option open for a change of reverse design in the future, though there are no current plans for such a change.
12. The CCAC discussed some general issues regarding the Presidential dollar coins. Several members noted that for the first eight issues (2007 and 2008), the results of the committee’s voting had shown a preference for images forward-facing images that depicted Presidents as they appeared during their term of office.
13. Cliff Northup of the United States Mint informed the committee that the 2007 coins were in production, and that the designs would be revealed on Monday November 20.
14. Ms. Budow then presented proposed themes and designs for fractional issues (half ounce, quarter ounce, tenth ounce) of the Mint’s 24-karat gold proof coin program. Mr Northup indicated that for 2007, the Mint planned to continue using the Indian/Buffalo design on one-ounce 24-karat pieces, and that the preferred course was to use the same design on the fractional issues, as well.
15. The committee voted unanimously to approve the proposed themes and designs for 2007 for the 24-Karat gold one-ounce and fractional coins in both proof and uncirculated qualities.
16. Kevin Hamer of the United States Mint informed the committee that the Mint was open to considering continuation of the Buffalo/Indian theme in future years, and was also open to exploring alternative themes. Mr Hamer also indicated that the Mint would be conducting research to determine its preferred course of action.
17. The committee then turned to a discussion of its Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2006. The report is to contain the CCAC’s recommendation for numismatic commemoratives to be issued in the five-year period from 2007 to 2011. Current statutory authority allows two programs per year.
18. The committee voted unanimously to recommend that one of the 2011 issues commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps.
19. The committee also agreed that the Annual Report would not include recommendations for commemoratives in years with two programs already enacted into law. The committee endorsed the following recommendations:
2008: 150th anniversary of the birth of Theodore Roosevelt
2008: 50th anniversary of NASA and JPL
2010: 150th anniversary of the Pony Express/50th anniversary of Echo communications satellite
2010: American Veterans Disabled for Life
20. The committee discussed the possibility of recommending a circulating commemorative dime honoring the 250th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Hamilton in 2007, in addition to the regular Roosevelt dime.
21. Mr Sanders moved that the committee should recommend a circulating commemorative dime in 2008, honoring the 150th anniversary of the birth of Theodore Roosevelt, to be coined in addition to the regular Roosevelt dime. Ms Laws moved that the previous motion should be amended by changing “in addition to” to “in addition to or replacing.” Due to lack of support, both motions were withdrawn.
22. The committee voted unanimously to authorize the chair to exercise responsibility for completing the Annual Report, in consultation with any members who choose to consult with the chair at their initiative about the annual report, and then to circulate the draft for comment, not editing, at such point as he completes it.
23. The chair announced that the CCAC’s recommended design for the 2008 platinum bullion coins is no longer a valid design candidate, for intellectual property reasons. The committee voted unanimously to empower the chair to inform the Secretary of the Treasury about the CCAC’s second and third choices for the 2008 platinum issue.
24. The chair expressed the committee’s appreciation for the contributions of Leon Billings, who will be departing the CCAC due to the expiration of his term.
25. The committee voted unanimously to authorize the chair to report the results of the CCAC’s preferences regarding Presidential dollar coin designs, to incorporate them into the minutes, and to send the results to the Secretary of the Treasury.
26. There being no further business, the committee voted unanimously to adjourn, and the chair adjourned the meeting at 12:46 PM.

As I said in another thread, Coin World's online edition says that 2007-dated fractional Buffalo gold will be issued only in Proof and in BU-W, i.e., burnished planchet Uncirculated with the W mint mark. They will not be sold in bulk to dealers at the cheaper rates that fractional gold eagles are sold at. If you want one, you have to pay through the nose for one. Praise the Mint.
The one ounce Buffalos will be sold in Proof, in BU-W and in regular uncirculated through bullion dealers.
By the way, the Mint is sold out of 2006 regular uncirculated Buffalos. According to Coin World, an estimated 337,000 were sold.

The Mint has decided to cut the dealers out of the loop so that they can sell them directly to the public at a higher price than the equivalent bullion-priced coins.
