1886 IHC question

A friend of my wife brought over her a container of coins for me to look at. So... after some searching, I noticed this 1886 IHC that had a peculiar look to the 2nd 8. It looks like an 8 over ? The strike is weak. Also. not sure what the difference is on the I feather C or C feather A. If someone can explain the difference, it would be much appreciated. Sorry, no pics yet.

    Hi Ray,

There were two different hub designs that year. The first half of 1886, the last feather in the headdress points between the I and C in America. This is called a Type 1. The type 2 and more desirable of the types, the last feather in the headdress points between the C and A in America.

  • Thanks JJ... Not an IHC follower and my black book didn't explain the difference. As for the date question, I did a little closer look with a 7x loupe and the questionable second 8 looks like it could be a 9. Although the last digit ( a 6 ) is still quite distinct.

And this IHC is a C-A

  • There are some repunched dates known for both types, but in Rick Snow's book, he calls them "minor."
