Got the red book!! I found out that there was a sport collectibles place here in town, so I thought it couldn't hurt to call and see if they had it, and save myself a 100 mile roundtrip drive. They did! I decided against the grading book since I don't plan on selling anyway. The red book has some general grading guidelines, and I think those are good enough for my purposes. Does anyone think I'm foolish for not getting a grading book too? It's just all so darn confusing! image

I agree that the Red Book has enough grading guidelines for your situation. Sounds like you are approaching "information overload". Since you have the luxury of time, I would just take a deep breath and work it slowly. Start with the silver dollars, for example. I don't know if this has been said, but make sure to hold the coins on the edge so that you don't contact the face of any coin.

That's quite a collection. The 1899 dollar you said you thought was a peace dollar is actually a morgan dollar. The peace dollar started in 1921. Another great website to help learn your series is www.coinfacts.com.

I linked the pages for morgan dollars and peace dollars to help you tell the difference.

Sounds like you're off to a good start and hope to see you posting here for a while to come!

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Speety- Thanks for the link. The differences are blatantly obvious and I feel a little dumb for even asking! I thought it might be some subtle difference, like 15 stars instead of 16!

Just posted pics of all the loose 2x2s I could find. At the end of the list is a little ancient coin. Any ideas?

Your 1889 is called a Morgan image
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly."
