Teletrade coupons and raising your own bids

Anyone else find themselves doing this with those $50 Teletrade coupons they were giving out recently?
I wanted to use mine on a coin that I thought would sell in the $75-100 range. Even if I went a little high, after the $50 off it would be a good deal. I found a suitable seated dime for my collection to bid on.
The opening bid was $75,which is about the maximum I would have bid on it without a coupon. I placed my maximum bid at $100. My $75 bid was accepted...then I realized that $75 plus juice plus $4 shipping was still less than the $100 required for the coupon. If I won it at that price, I couldn't use it.
So I raised my own bid to $80...$85...and finally to $90. That way, if I won it I knew the invoice would be over $100 and I'd get the $50 off. (As it turned out I won it at my max of $100. Still turned out to be a total $66 with the coupon, juice and shipping included, which is much better than the $75+juice+S/H I would have paid without it.)

I did not receive one of the coupons so I wrote them and asked why, I mentioned that I have been with them since they first opened their doors back in 1987 (they used to sell NGC pregraded coins in sealed flips) so they ended up sending me one of the codes.
Last night I bought a 1992 prf69 1/4 oz American eagle, total price including shipping using the $50 off coupon was only $155.60 which translates into an average $622.40 an ounce for the proof coin with spot gold at over $640 it was a decent price. Essentially buying bullion gold below spot but in the more desirable deep cameo proof version, I was happy with the buy.

They were handing them out at the FUN show, and a board member had ten of them to "share" with the first ten to respond (he sent out the ten codes, one to each of us). Anyway, this is the one I bought (graded ANACS 35, which is irrelevant since it's getting cracked out into my Dansco):

Thats what the lady said to me as well (different person) but they gave me a code anyway. Maybe it was because I consigned a group of coins to them for their Las Vegas show a few months ago.

I went the same route as some others,picked up something I would not have bought otherwise.
With the deadline coming Jan 31,I bought a 2005 proof SAE,PCGS 69,for 27.00 after the coupon.
Couldn't find what I really wanted,but for $27.00
I just realized that for the rest of the year, bidders will be seeing those Jan 2007 +$50 prices when they view a lot. I'm sure these promotions work like a charm.

You won't come across that very often, I guess it is pseudo-shill bidding against oneself (not true shilling, as you are going to pay for it either way), just make sure the id with the coupon wins the auction. There were different types of coupons, mine was $50 off anything, and anything under $50 was free, so I didn't have to bid against myself.
